Detectives are investigating two students from Pinckney Community High School after finding guns in a car at the school. The Livingston County Sheriff's Department says they found four guns in the car, but a further investigation of the two boys involved led to more, a total of 17 guns, all stolen.

Guns on school property can create fear in quiet communities. That's why the Livingston County Sheriff's Department reacted quickly when they got a tip of possible weapons at Pinckney Community High School.

Sheriff Bob Bezotte, Livingston County Sheriff's Dept.: "We look at worse case scenario and then react to it."

Sheriff Bob Bezotte says detectives found four guns in the trunk of car belonging to two male students. A further investigation found the boys had broken into a house at the end of January and stole 17 guns, ranging from handguns and rifles to shotguns. Sheriff Bezotte says the two also took ammunition and other property.

Sheriff Bob Bezotte: "When the two young men broke into the house, they probably didn't know how many weapons they were going to get, but they did know how to get rid of them and their thought pattern was to sell them to fellow students."

With money as the motive, Bezotte says the boys intended no harm to other students and faculty. The guns were not loaded, only up for sale.

Sheriff Bob Bezotte: "We're fortunate to get the weapons back for the homeowner, but also to get them off the street."

No formal charges have been brought on the boys yet. As the investigation continues, the school wants to make clear that nobody was, or is, in danger, and they are dealing with the problem quickly.

Dr. Jim Darga, Principal: "It's important because when those students come into the building in the morning, these parents need to know when they cross the threshold, it's a safe environment for all students."

The principal says he'll send out a letter to all parents Wednesday, explaining everything that is going on.
