VIENNA TWP. - Red paint chips may link a recent gun store burglary to a pair of men who posed as cops and used a phony warrant in a bizarre home invasion on Wilson Road last week.

Four handguns and about 10 compound bows were taken from Ed's Archery and Sporting Goods, 4483 E. Vienna Road, about 5:15 a.m. Jan. 31 after a vehicle smashed through the store's front door.

"It was quick in, quick out," said state police detective Sgt. Stephen Sipes.

But the culprit may have left something behind.

Red paint found on the store's wrecked front entrance has prompted investigators to wonder if that break-in is related to a red pickup involved in a home invasion Friday morning about a mile away on Wilson Road.

Two men wearing T-shirts with "police" printed on them showed up at the front door about 6 a.m. Friday and announced to the resident that they had a warrant to search the house.

The men grabbed guns and other items before leaving in a red, early '90s model, four-wheel drive Chevrolet pickup with a loud exhaust.

One suspect had a red beard and mustache, a fresh scratch under his eye and was about 25-30 years old, 5-foot-8 to 5-foot-10 and 180 pounds. The other suspect was in his early 20s, 5-foot-4 and 130 pounds.

The red paint and the common target of guns leads police to believe the thefts may not be a coincidence.

"It was the same area, the same week," said Sipes.

Ed's Archery manager Gordon Faille said last month's break-in was the first since the store's front window was broken about six years ago.

"Nothing was taken in that one," said Faille.

Last month, 11 rifles and shotguns were stolen from Williams Gun Sight and Outfitters in Davison Township.

The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is investigating both gun shop thefts.

Anyone with information is asked to call state police at (810) 732-1111.
