I am looking to buy my first gun(s). I am a full time student so the budget is not high. I'd like to own something that shoots .22LR, because of the affordability of the ammo.

For target shooting only.

To give you my experience, I have shot 10+ 9mm, 20+ .45, 3+ .40, I have also shot an M1A1, AR15, Mosin Nagant M44, Ruger 10 22 and a few other rifles.

I compiled a poll of what I should get as my first gun. If you have experience with what you chose or didn't choose, please fill me in. If I didn't include one, mark other and tell me why!

Shoot them all and pick the one you shoot the best.

I like the Ruger Mark I - III series but that's just me. YMMV

I have seen a few people recommend the browning buckmark but that looks like it would hit the top end of my budget. What is the average price at a gun store and what about used?

Whats your budget? I'ts been a while since I looked at them but the Buckmarks can probably be had new for around $300.

I'll say this. Your a young dude and if you buy a quality 22 pistol now whether it be a Browning or a Ruger, you will never regret it. This gun will last you forever, you will fire 1000's of rounds through it and will have hours of fun with it and probably end up teaching your kids and grandkids how to shoot with it. Don't go cheap, this will be money well spent.

My budget is $400 max and that is being quite generous. I would rather stay around $200-250. If I got one for $200, I could also buy a rifle for around the same price.

buy whatever you want and you enjoy, do not buy based on what a random collection of people vote for.
by the way i am going to pick the most expensive ones on your poll.

go look at guns, our shop is right down walton from rochester.
send me a PM and i can set a time up for you to come in and show you TONS of different options and see which fits you best.

going by a poll will be a mistake you may end up with a gun you hate.

just my two cents, I do hope to hear from you though.

Buckmarks can be had brand new (Buckmark Camper) for $300 +tax. Finding a used one can be difficult. People tend to hold on to them. The people that sell, with a few exceptions, think that they are worth more than what they (should have) paid for them, JMHO.

As others have stated, go to a shop and handle a few, you might not like how they feel or look once you get a chance to see them in person.

Rent and shoot them. You'll know the right one when it "fits", and you can afford it...

I love shooting the old lever action rifles, .22 makes it even more fun due to the cost. I would really consider shopping around some local shops for a good quality lever action rifle/pistol. Brand new the Henry rifles only run around $250 and the Ruger .22 pistols are around $299.99. Used you should be able to stay under budget and have a couple of nice firearms.

The AK .22 conversion, since youre only looking at .22, might as well make it a B.A. looking .22

Aside from being one of my personal favorite guns the Ruger 10/22 is priced right and is a dependable little rifle. There are a lot of options when looking at after market barrels, stocks, mags, ect. Keep your eye on the Dunham's adds in your local paper. Some times they have them on sale for about $200-$220 plus they are also ALWAYS running good ammo sales 525 rounds of Remmington .22 for around $16.00.

Good luck and happy shooting.

I voted "other." My first gun was a Beretta CX4 Storm chambered in .45 acp. Very fun gun. I'm not voting for that as your first for a few reasons, but get something that you can have a lot of fun with that will keep you coming back for more. My third gun was an AR-15 and I kinda wish I would have went with that first. They wouldn't be bad guns to start off with. Good Luck!

I marked the 10/22 as a good choice. My first gun was a Ruger P89 9mm. I have since moved on to others but you never forget your first. ;-)

I would say buy the best gun you can with the amount of money you have, and save up for the next, instead of trying to get two at one time. JMO.

All depends on if you want a pistol or rifle first. Either way you would be hard pressed to do better than the Ruger, rifle 10/22, or pistol MK I-III
Good luck and be safe. :pistols:

Just my opinion. All of these are fun and reasonably affordable.
1. Browning Buckmark URX with the contoured rubber grip.
2. (Tie): Ruger Mark III 22/45,
Ruger 10/22
