So I am purchasing my first ar-15 this week and have a few questions. The owner removed the rear sites to put on his other ar-15, but offered to sell them to me if I wanted them. So on to the first question. . .
1) Should I shell out an extra 200 for this high end rear site if im going put optics on it?
2) I have poor eye site in my right eye, what type of optics should I be looking into? At most I would be shooting 100yds so should I be looking scope or something like a red dot? Would one be better with my weak eye site?

-Jeff- Hell NO!! I'll let the others comment on the bad eye thing because i don't know. Under normal circumstances, a red dot is plenty out to 100yds and beyond. Unless you want super super precise.

I don't know what the hell kind of rear sight he has that is worth $200. Even the top of the line rear sights go for about $100 brand new. I wouldn't bother.

If he is asking $200.00 for rear sights, I hate to think what he is selling you the rest of the gun for. Hope you did your homework and get a good price on a used AR15 :twocents:

$200 is outrageous for a rear iron sight!...... Hope you are not getting ripped off on the gun too!?!?
Check out rear sights here

For 100 yards or less a red dot works just fine... if you are looking for center mass accuracy, but if you want pinpoint accuracy a scope is your best bet.

Actually I misunderstood. . . there is already optics on the gun that was quoted with that price. My father in law has seen the gun and im going off what he has been telling me. I will get a chance to see it this thursday I think. Once again thanks for all the help. Im sure I will have more questions eventually lol.

No reason to get both irons and optics. I recommend a 3-9x 40mm scope for an AR-15, it complements the long range potential of the rifle well.

Millet SP1 is good on my handgun. Take a look at them--at a gun shop. Handle/look thru whatever you are going to buy.

If you wanted both flip up sights with a scope, i'd looking into quick release scope mounts. Dead accurate and won't lose your zero. LaRue makes some cool ones. LT-104

Many reasons to have both, but I guess it depends on what the gun is used for

That was post #6 out of 11 that he made in 14 minutes, just more of the "Marketplace" spilling out into the rest of the forum.
If it is any consequence, the rest of his posts are of equal importance.

Any red dot that can hold up to firing should work. Then you really dont have to worry about closing an eye.
