Anyone on here have any experience with the GSG 1911? I would really love a 1911 frame gun and I have heard great things on other forums but wanted to see if anyone had any experience on here.

I want it just for plinking.

do you have GSG or the Sig 1911? my only issue is the sig is EXACTLY the same as the GSG, but you pay extra for the name

Ive looked at 1911's for a few months now trying to decide on what to buy, theres a lot of options and the price range is huge. I finally decided on the American Classic 1911, either the American Classic II or Commander size, even after you decide you still have decisions to make. You can get one of the ACII for under 500, and all the reviews say they are built and perform like an $800 dollar and up gun. So for plinking I'd say go for an AC or RIA...:para:

The OP is referring to .22LR 1911s.

I have 250 rds through my GSG 1911 and absolutely love it. GSG is the company actually making the Sig Sauers version says so on the barrel.

I have an unknown number of rounds through mine.... probably 2000 or so. I get ftf's and fte's occasionally, but it is not a defensive pistol so it doesn't bother me. If anything it is good training for malfunction clearance. I love it, and it shoots VERY accurately.

I just picked up a GSG 1911 after Xmas. They are in deed, the EXACT same gun as the SIG. Same mags, same everything except the name. My GSG came with the wood grips as well. One thing the dealer did tell me is that it will be tough to find the GSG branded mags for it. Seems SIG pays more so they get them first. I got my GSG for $339 while the SIG in the same display case was $379. That $40 is enough for a spare mag. Yikes, they are that expensive... Haven't even shot my GSG yet, but I've taken it apart about 10 times, already replaced the safety lever for a single sided safety that is beveled, and bought an extended slide release for it. It's nice that a lot of the regular 1911 parts are interchangeable.

Bad news. My guide rod broke on my last range visit... Good news. I emailed ATI and they are sending me the parts FREE. Bad news. They are backordered so no cheap plinking for a while.

Can you use one from a normal 1911? Then get a one piece guide rod. I've been looking at them with intentions of replacing mine. Haven't measured one yet though.

EDIT: After some searching, they aren't the same but there is someone making a steel replacement. Google GSG guiderod. I may pick one up and use the stock one as a spare.

Tyler, I just made a new guide rod for my GSG today. I noticed the aluminum one starting to show some bending. Instead of waiting for it to break, I decided to make a new one. Turned out great. Took me about 2 hrs on my lathe. Made it from mild steel. I hear you can make them from aluminum too - real aluminum instead of the die cast aluminum GSG uses.

Jman, how old is your gun? The reason I ask is because I have well over 10,000 rounds through mine and my guide rod is fine. I am just wondering if this is a problem with newer guns or all of them. I did have my barrel bushing crack, but ATI replaced it with a steel one. I have some 7075 T-6 laying around so maybe I will just make one for giggles.

I picked my gun up at the end of Dec. It came with a steel barrel bushing from the factory. The rod didn't break, but I didn't like the amount of deflection showing on it. I am going to shoot the new guide rod at pins tomorrow night to see how it functions.

Thanks Jman, I got mine about 15 months ago and it had the AL bushing so maybe they traded 1 problem for another? Considering I paid ~330 for the gun and about $400 for 10,000 rounds of practice ammo, and all the controls are identical to a 1911, it is still a nice cheap practice gun imho.

I'm not complaining. Like I said, I haven't a failure yet. I wanted to avoid a potential issue, plus it gave me an excuse to play with my lathe. So far the gun has been 100% reliable. Plus, it takes lots of standard 1911 parts.

Here is a pic of the new guide rod.

Jman, I did not mean to suggest that you were complaining:cheers: I was just expanding on my own thoughts.

Nice work btw. They definitely changed the guide rod. My stock one looks identical to the one you made, except in color.

I have since blued it to match all the other gn parts. It turned out pretty good. First one got messed up when I forgot I had left the carriage advance engaged and it gouged the part and bent it - also breaking my cutter. V2 came out better and even went faster. Dry function checks have been good so far, now to try it with live ammo and see how it does. I am thinking of making another from aluminum too, just for giggles.

I love having a lathe and mill! Did you use a Live Center or a follower rest to prevent deflection of the part when turning the thinner portion?

I wanted to but my tailstock is busted. It made it tough. I had to go VERY slowly after it got thinner to be sure it was cutting straight. I also found it went better if I went from the thicker end and cut toward the thin end. Still took a long time. If I had a live center, it would have gone much faster by allowing me to take deeper cuts. Had to get pretty light toward the end. I finished it with 120 grit sandpaper followed by 320 grit. If you look close, you can still see some tool marks but it was plenty good for what it's purpose is. It would go better if I wasn't so cheap and had some carbide cutters as well. All in all, I was impressed by the accuracy of the little harbor Freight lathe. My big one is in the garage and it's too cold out...

Regardless man, it is way better than the stock one. And although I have a high dollar Hong ** from KBC, :etoh: Nice job.

I didn't notice any bending or unusual wear on it until it broke. I didn't even have that many rounds through it.

Tyler, I could make you a new rod so you can shoot instead of waiting for the GSG one to arrive. I am heading out of town tomorrow for a week and won't be home until 2/1. If you haven't received your replacement by then, let me know and I will whip you up a new one. Say, $20 including shipping?

Good to see a lot of good reviews. I recently purchased one and am going to shoot it for the first time this weekend.

I've defeated the magazine disconnect already and ordered a non-ambi safety and extended slide release.

Post your updates. I have one of these on my "to buy" list when my tax refund hits.
Looks like I need to see what I get in the thing and make the (positive) changes from there.

I think anyone wanting a .22LR pistol with the grip of a 1911 should forget all these 1911 clones, and buy a Ruger 22/45. It will out shoot the rest of them, and out last you!
