MANCELONA — A new shooting club has come to town.
The recently formed Chain of Lakes Sportsman's Club, on 80 acres west of Mancelona, held its first shoot Saturday, said founding member Brian Kroll.Kroll also is on the board of directors at nearby Elk Rapids Sportsman's Club, where an ongoing land dispute may soon close that club's doors.
"This isn't a relocation of the Elk Rapids club," Kroll said. "There's no collaboration from the Elk Rapids Club."Kroll said about 20 people — including a few who have connections to the Elk Rapids club — pooled resources to buy a former gravel pit off M-88 between Mancelona and Shanty Creek resort, land that used to belong to Reith Riley Construction Company of Goshen, Ind.
