Two students arrested in February for trying to sell four stolen guns in the Pinckney High School parking lot were each officially charged this week with four felonies.

Rush D. Richards, 17, was released on a $50,000 personal bond after his arraignment Wednesday in Livingston County District Court. He is charged as an adult.

The other suspect, 16, was charged Wednesday in the county's juvenile court. He waived his preliminary hearing Friday and is scheduled for a pre-trial conference on May 16. He was released on a $50,000 personal recognizance bond. The bond stipulates that the youth be released into his parents' custody with certain conditions. He has a 10 p.m. nightly curfew, may not possess a firearm or any other dangerous weapon, is prohibited from having any contact with the victim and has restricted-driving privileges. If he violates any of the terms of his bond, he faces arrest without a warrant, revocation of bond and placement in a juvenile detention center.

Both teens were charged with first-degree home invasion, a 20-year felony, and receiving and concealing stolen weapons, carrying a concealed weapon and violating the weapon-free school zone, all five-year felonies.

Livingston County Assistant Prosecutor Marilyn Bradford said the court will consider moving the juvenile's case to Livingston County Circuit Court, where he would face charges as an adult.

But, she said, "because of his history, I think the first thing we will look at is rehabilitation. I believe there are more services available in the juvenile justice system.''

If his case remains in juvenile court, he cannot be held past the day he turns 21.

Richards is scheduled to appear before 53rd District Court Judge John Pikkarainen for a preliminary exam conference on April 25. The teen was placed on a 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew.

Both teens were expelled from school on March 16.

The two are accused of stealing the four guns police found in a car at the school and a dozen more during a Jan. 25 break-in at a Putnam Township house. The pair also allegedly took a gun from the home of one of the teens.

The guns were not loaded, but the teens told Livingston County sheriff's investigators they had ammunition for them, authorities. The teens told police they never intended to use the guns at the school, but were trying to sell them, they said. Investigators said no one tried to buy the guns.

The teens also allegedly stole ammunition, a compound bow, a safe, a security lockbox and about two dozen other items with an approximate value of more than $8,000. Sheriff's Lt. Todd Luzod said the teens altered one of the guns, a shotgun, after it was stolen.
