COLLEGE GROUP MAKES POINT WITH GUN-GIVEAWAY . . . The College Libertarians at the University of Michigan focused on the importance of Second Amendment rights at a gathering at the university's Michigan Union and put an exclamation point on the meeting by awarding a gun of the winner's choice in a raffle. Following presentations by Michigan Gun Owners president Mike Thiede and Shooters' Alliance for Firearm Rights secretary Neva Li, who is a U. of Michigan alumna, College Libertarians chair Jeremy Linden pulled out the winning raffle ticket. When asked what gun she would choose, the winner, Laura Dodd, another Michigan alumna, said that she already owns one gun for home safety and target shooting and would like "something concealable", reports the Michigan Daily (http://www.michigandaily.com/home/index.cfm?event=displayArticlePrinterFriendly&uStory_id=2b91c350-4d85-46cf-bd3a-63ea8667fc38). Because it is illegal to carry a firearm on campus, the group said it would escort Dodd to a firearms dealer off-campus to make the purchase.

Tell that to all the women who are assualted on campus. Violate a loved one of a board member and that would be a different story.

The only place a firearm on campus is illegal is a dorm or classroom.

8. A dormitory or classroom of a community college, college, or university.

A sport stadium on campus would also be off limits.

Sorry but UM, MSU and some others are created in the Michigan constitution so they are treated differently.

The CPL law prohibits concealed carry in college or university dorms or classrooms. And the pre-emption law would seem to prohibit public colleges and universities (except Univ. of Michigan, Michigan State Univ. and Wayne State Univ.) from enacting carry restrictions that are stricter than state law allows. (U-M, MSU and WSU are constitutional entities, and the constitution allows them greater control over university property.)

but the law does not include the parking lots.

but the law does not include the parking lots.

Doesn't apply to UofM and the special others. State law can pretty much be nulified by them. Granted unless you are a student and an employee you won't be parking in a UofM parking lot though. There are so few, that they have different classes. The 2nd best parking pass costs you over $500 a year, and you still aren't guaranteed a spot, and might have to walk a quarter mile to get where you are going. The "Gold" pass I think costs over a $1000, and those usually get you right next to a building. My wife is subject to this highway robbery every year as an employee, so I know a little about it. So the moral of the story, until we figure out a way to force these universities to fall under state law, don't get caught on their property, any property, with a gun.

you shouldn't need to have a weapon at college, at the one I attend thier is a fairly large police force on campus. Although, they can't watch everything there is going to be times when people are still not going to be protected even if there is a large force of police. Not even campus safety is allowed to have weapons. There is although a flint police station on many parts of the campus.

Is this sarcasm? If so, please forgive me.. Sometimes I can't tell.

An UNARMED police force is pretty much useless against somebody determined to wreak havoc. Come to think of it, so is an armed police force.......by the time they arrive, the crime has been committed.

No, you are on your own......always have been, always will be. Don't expect the media to explain this. Have a plan.

Tell that to the 12 women raped in the 1st few months of this semester at MSU... or any of the others...

Police are there to take a report after a crime happens not to protect you

yes there is armed flint police on campus but even if you have 30 cops roaming the streets that will not stop some people from breaking the law and doing unspeakable acts. The bottom line you need to prepare yourself for the worse. And that is by arming yourself and be ready to use it when someone does try to harm or kill you.

Armed Campus Security varies from University to University. Michigan Technological University has Public Saftey officers that are armed. In fact they have been deputized by the Houghton County Sheriff. I can't vouch for whether or not UofM cops are armed though. I was at MTU when the decision was made to arm the Kampus Kops. Some of the liberal whiners I knew wanted to know what they needed guns for. I then explained that they are real cops and since one of the major highways of the UP runs right through the center of campus (US41) they might run into an armed criminal. That usually shut them up.

my campus has both unarmed campus safety and Flint police officers
