The Friday before a holiday weekend is not the time to speed. But it's really tempting when you have to make a surprise trip out of state to get some recently legalized toys out of storage. I wasn't sure if I'd make it back before it got too dark to shoot. But the sun was still above the horizon.

Discussion of the recent AG opinion legalizing silencers in MI found here (http://www.migunowners.org/forum/showthread.php?t=147127), as well as on a few other threads.

And here I was wondering last week why I had just bought a new suppressor host when I get to use them so rarely any more. All better.

Sort of. Shoot with both eyes open and you can sight "through" the can. One eye sees the sight, and the other sees the target. It's not too difficult, and is pretty effective.

Of course, this one works pretty well too.

Can I post this picture, even though the 9mm SBR isn't allowed in Michigan?

Yeah yeah. Rub it in. Sadly, some of my other toys are still locked up out of state.

Check it out - here's me on the first day silencers were legal in Missouri too. SBRs were already legal there, though.

Here's a question:

How does the Form 4 work the address listed on it? Do you keep two residences?

Usually between $300 - $1200 depending on what you are getting. That, plus $200 tax, and dealer fees.

Long story. You can move them to any other state where it's legal, with ATF approval (prior approval not required for AOWs or silencers). I keep some of them locked up in my "home" state. Others get moved to storage in a neighboring state. You'd be surprised how much stuff you can fit in a safe deposit box.

Unfortunately I've had a lot of practice at this. When I lived in Missouri, they stayed 1000 miles to the west. Later, I moved to the other side of the state, and was able to move them an hour or so away into Nebraska. Silencers became legal in Kansas 6 months before MO, so I moved them there. When they became legal in MO, I just had to drive 15 minutes to KS to pick them up.

It's a little farther from here to the state line, but round trip is just over 2 hours. Still very doable.

The Form 4 lists the permanent address for the registered "item." You are allowed to travel with your "item" across state lines. Suppressors are free to travel, but SBS, SBR, and Machineguns require a 5320.20 to travel across state lines. It takes about 30-45 days for the 5320.20 to come back to you, so plan ahead. They are only good for a year and then have to be renewed.

No paperwork is required to bring suppressors across state lines.

I would bet that GarretJ has his items on a Trust or LLC.

Nope. All in my name. I've always lived in places where the sheriff would sign. Most of them were pretty positive about it. The Police Chief in St. Louis County, MO made me wait 2 weeks, but eventually he signed too. :fa:

Ya i know you keep them in bank lock boxes. So do you just keep doing 5320.20's to keep them closer to MI vs. the place they are actually registered to?

OR do you still keep that "residence" that's listen on the form 4 as address?

Correct. I file a pile of 5320.20s each year for any state that I think I might want to visit, anyway. Since moving here, IN and OH are on the list anyway.

Or I could always file for a permanent move as well. I did a few of those when I moved out of Missouri, for example.

Weird but does the ATF care where you live? As long as you pay the tax. It was Michigan that had the problem with the posession of supressors not the ATF. So as long as you kept it out of MI you were still legal.

Just saying so to speak. :???:

Yeah, but ear plugs aren't nearly as much fun or as cool.

Form1 will take care of that.

File, with your plans(if memory serves) then pay the man 200 bones.

After that you get a tax stamp, and are able to create it.

If you create first, even if you just create a baffle, you are in violation of the law... in a pretty big way.

Doesn't matter. You can suppress anything you want to with the current opinion.

Yes it is. I keep thinking I need to get a set of Crimson Trace laser grips. Sighting through the can is okay, but something like that might be better.
