i'm looking to make an AOW (super shorty w/vertical foregrip) and could use some help. ive read that for an AOW the tax is only $5 but on the ATF forum 1 all i see is the $200 tax stamp. i will pay the $200 if i have to but would rather pay $5. is there a different forum to fill out for AOW or am i stuck paying for the $200 tax stamp? any help would be appreciated

Does this shot gun already have a shoulder stock on it?

As far as I know it can't be done legally.

When Serbu gets the receivers in for their Super Shorty's, they can never have been married to a stock.

dougwg: i think you might be right about that. that would explain why they get $700 for a mossberg 500 that i could make in my garage for under $200

If you are not a Manufacturer the Tax for "making" an AOW is $200. FFL/Manufacturer's with a SOT can "make" AOW's for you and then transfer the item to you for $5. Often times, it is cheaper to have the manufacturer do the "making" even if they charge you $100.

For the vast majority of AOW's, a stock must never have been on the receiver. There is an exception for OU rifle/shotgun combos that look like SBR's, but are actually AOW's. The problem here in MI is that my reading of the law makes them ilegal because the State still considers AOW's with a stock to be SBR's.

As far as I knew, the limitation was in Michigan law (making or remaking a rifle/shotgun into something smaller than 26" OAL = SBS/SBR and is illegal here).

I believe there was a recent ATF guideline change that allows for Pistols to be made into rifles and rifles to be made into pistols and not run afoul of NFA. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

In theory someone could use one of several Mossberg 500 designs that came factory with out a stock and make an AOW? Right?

So you cant slap on a VFG on a tec-9, Steyr, uzi or mac and register it as an AOW for $5?

A manufacturer with a paid SOT can do that for free and then transfer it to a citizen for $5. A citizen or non-manufacturer/FFL can do that for $200 on a form 1.

I pursued that path when I wanted to put a VFG on my PLR-16. No go. $200 and all the paperwork is required. I decided to pass as my CLEO is not 2A friendly, at least for civilians.
