I got my lil' brother doin the dirty work for me, loaned him my bow and the rental fee is payable in jerky. If I wasn't tied up, I'd be in the field myself

This will be my first time hunting. I picked up some arrows for a bow I am borrowing. I plan on sighting in today as well as picking up some broadheads. Any tips or suggestions on broadheads would be helpful. I plan on hunt on my buddies private land in dexter. He has a couple acres in his back yard and I see a couple deer now and then eating in his garden.

I saw 9 deer opening morning, including a big 8 or 10 point. None of them came close enough for a shot. I saw nice 6 point Sunday morning but he never came out where I could get a clean shot. Overall it was a good opening weekend.

The property owner took two opening day. A small buck in the morning and a 5 point in the evening (would have been six but one tine was broken off) And he had offered to let me hunt his stand that night .....DOH!!!

It's crunch time now, only 3 months to get one. LOL

Small six and a fork have been crossing under me. Waiting for something bigger.

Yesterday afternoon a doe with twins came in to about 40 yards and milled around.....went home that night and pushed my zero to 25 yards (20 previously).

Brand new animal to me. Got a PSE Bowmadness 1 week before opening day. 30" draw shooting 58lbs. Havent got it over a chrono yet but who cares it's enough to kill anything on this continent. Been shooting the snot out of it since, with multiple trips to Vans Archery (those guys are a godsend). 100gr 3 blade Rage that shoots as accurate as my field points. Got a 4 pin truglo that works wonderfully although I blacked out the lower three pins. I know I know, crazy but KISS for the foreseeable future. I'm dead on til 25, 3" low @ 30 and 7" low at 35. I wont shoot past 30 this season. Waiting for that perfect moment.

I too LOVE the idea of being in the woods for 3 months...I may even take two weeks off in november....:)

I just got word that my brother tagged one, but he lives in DE. I'll be back out in the woods this weekend.

I'm sitting in the same stand as last year where I had activity every other hunt or so; this year not a thing. Kinda strange not seeing them as much as last year. I did take a doe on the first day of the early anterless season with my shotgun but haven't seen a thing with my bow.

I ordered a few new broadheads yesterday from a newer company. Interesting design: http://www.firenthehole.com/

I saw those a while back. Just looked to me like it would take a lot of umpf to push that ring portion through a deer

Took a 5-point Saturday evening -- first deer ever, and one hell of a time!

Hunting on federal land just outside of Wellston. Set up a new stand and was sweating like a pig afterward. Wasn't expecting to see much of anything that night but was beyond belief when I had 7 deer walk in on me (Have hunted the area for the past 3 seasons now and have seen 2-3 deer at most, and almost always all does at that). First was a doe, fawn and a spike, soon followed by a couple more spikes and lastly (what I thought were) two 4-points. Bided my time and eventually the doe & fawn walked off and two of the spikes got spooked off by a chipmunk running around.

Waited for what seemed like forever to get a shot on mine -- almost panicked when he walked into a clearing and stopped and looked right at me. Had my bow up and ready and was trying my damnedest not to shake and spook him  Luckily for me, he dropped his head and took a step forward opening up his shoulder... took a weak-handed shot at about 25-30 yards. Found him about 50 yards down the trail (thankfully, towards my Jeep!). Double-lung pass-through.

Gear:
Excalibur Phoenix
Slick Trick 100 gr. Mags that worked exceptionally well

And before some of you get your panties in a bunch... I tried my hand at a compound bow last year, but with an extensive shoulder injury can't keep the thing drawn without worrying of a dislocation. While it did it's job in this case, unfortunately I don't see my crossbow being a deer killing machine that will wipe out the herd like some are worried it will be. :bash:

I usually don't stick six points, but I had a decent one under the apple tree tonight.

I was thinking about sticking when I remembered I have to be in at work at 6:00am and it was hotter than hell out.

Next time amigo.

I admit to being a total and complete noob at killing deer with cutlery, but I gotta ask:

why the hell dont the Rage 3 blades I have shave hair off my arm? I have been cleaning fish and game for quite awhile now, as well as earning my living as a cook (and I shave with a straight razor) I know knives and I know whats sharp. These ain't. My EDC puts em to shame.

Just to make absolutely sure I went out and got a set of replacement blades. Same story.

I assumed an expensive-as-hell brandname broadhead would be the sharpest thing I'd laid hands on. What a letdown....

My cousins slick trick 100gr were much sharper, and I switched to Thunderhead fixed/replaceable 100gr 3 blade. Much better as well, but still not what I was expecting. Sigh....

My buddy got a spike this morning, hit both lungs and heart (checked after we gutted it) and the damn thing still ran ~500 yards in a circle and nearly made it back to where he shot it.

I still haven't taken anything, but I'm beginning to figure out why they are so skittish this year. Saw a absolutely MASSIVE coyote last night stalking a fawn. Never was able to get a shot on it, saw me as soon as it came into the area.

Noob here too, but when I first started looking at broadheads I heard quite a lot of mixed reviews on the Rage blades. Lots of guys on the Excalibur forums preached about Slick Tricks so that's what I went with and couldn't be happier. And I can confirm that they work mighty well at shaving too

The blades don't have to be hair cutting sharp to kill game. I carry a small diamond sharpening rod and touch them up if I feel they are too dull.
