Hi all,

I'm Pete from Finland, and I joined Migunowners.org for reasons you can read about in 'General Firearms Issues'. In case you want to know something about firearm issues in Finland, please ask!

Yes, ouch! Generally US-made guns are quite affordable here, but AR's are an exception for some reason. Too bad it's a semi-auto assault rifle I need for my sport, now using a Bulgarian 7.62x39 AK. BTW, the cheapest ammo for AK is 55-57USD / 250 rounds and a bit more for .223.

Hmmm russian ammo (7.62x39) for a russian gun (AK) runs $69.99 for 500 rounds just down the street from me. .223 is $2 cheaper. These prices have gone up in the last few monthes thanks to rising fuel and copper costs.

Oh yeah, welcome to the boards.

Pete, I'm curious about handgun laws in Finland. Are you allowed to own/carry handguns? Are there any caliber restrictions?

Hi Pete!
It's been a long since I visited Finland....Helsinki. Absolutely loved it, even though I was there in October. Actually, it was probably better that way...fewer tourists. I kept the tray liner from the McDonald's...fun to read in Finnish!
Welcome!!

Hi Pete, Welcome to MGO,

I'd invite you dinner on Thursday, But you'd probably need to Leave yesterday.

Do you ever see any US Military Arms from WW II over there Like M-1 Garands?

Owning handguns: No problem, no caliber restrictions.
Carrying: No way. For authorities only.

Concealed carry is prohibited here, and that's why there are certain limits for the physical size of a pistol/revolver. For example: Glock 17 is OK, Glock 19 is not.

Maranatha, thanks for invitation! FYI, flying from Helsinki to Detroit takes less than 12 hours. M-1's are rare and expensive. Otherwise we have here more than enough of that WWII stuff.

Thats interesting. Over here there are several places that will shorten the grip length on a Glock to make it more concealable. For instance:
Glock 21 reduced to accept factory Glock 30 magazines.
G17 reduced to accept G19 mags. G19 reduced for G26 mags.

BigNorth
06-20-2006, 03:39 PM
And here everyone likes their mags as big as they get:fa:
Concealed carrying... Nobody does it, hardly anyone want's to do it, and practically nobody is permitted to do it. Since hunting with a handgun is against the law here as well, the only use for a pistol or a revolver is sport shooting. That's what I'm doing (w/ Beretta 92FS) and that's what thousands of Finnish Glock owners are doing.

Hello BigNorth

How are laws there on self defence?

Like if someone broke into your house and tried to harm you or your family?

Are you allowed to use deadly force to protect yourself?

Reasonable amount of force is OK when under attack. The law includes a term "excessive self-defence". Guess who's going to prison then? Although Finland is a safe country and most of the crimes are car stereo thefts, done by otherwise harmless junkies. I don't know anyone owning a firearm for self defence, and it's not an acceptable ground for applying a gun license.

And you will see similar low crime stats in rural USA. one of the things that happen in crowded areas (big cities) is a high crime rate. People just can't lv peacefully in high density population.

here in St clair county Michigan

Population Served 163,912

INDEX TOTAL 4,015
Murder & Non-negligent Manslaughter 0
Rape (includes attempts) 91
Robbery 35
Assault - Aggravated 320
Burglary 648
Larceny 2,604
Motor Vehicle Theft 276
Arson 41

Wayne county MI (Detroit)

Population Served 2,023,343

Isn't Detroit one of the most dangerous cities in the US? 413 kills in a city of 2M people is a lot... Somehow I start to understand the security point of view to gun owning. I live in the "crowded" southwest Finland in a town of 24.000 people. It has been at least 10 years since somebody got killed here. Burglaries take place occasionally, but hardly ever in to private homes.

If you take the total number of crimes and remove crimes connected to:
- drugs (thefts)
- alcohol (violence)
- how should I say it... our eastern neighbors (thefts)
... there's not much left.
Of cource removing these points doesn't remove the crime itself...

right Detroit one of the worst cities. I work in Detroit but live in St Clair county 50 miles one way from home to work. Not too far but what a diifference but that is common away from the biig cities. No crowds, no traffiic no stress.

My township / city is only 6,000 people. 163000 for the whole county

It is a lot more complicated than just population density. I live in the same county as Detroit, in Livonia, which has a population in excess of 105,000. We have 1 - 2 murders a year and we consistently rank as one of the safest cities in the United States. The median income, percentage of college degrees, rate of emplyment, two parent homes etc. are significantly higher than they are in Detroit.

Two years ago we had 7 murders - a record number - one saw 5 members of a family killed and the other saw 2 people in a restaurant killed. In both cases the killers came from outside of the city.

I know you people don't have a midsummer tradition, but we do and it's today. It's the day for 10-20 Finns to drown. The traditional way to do it is:

- get very drunk.
- go boating (what a great idea!)
- urinate in the lake or sea.
- loose your balance
- die with your zipper open.

Happy midsummer!

OUCH....

Here it was just a few fights. One gal hit in the face with a bottle and one boat set adrift.

had a coast guard recovery vehicle out there, 4 fast boats and several Sheriff boats to try and keep the peace.
