For a center fire pistol, it's very similar to having a pair of earmuffs on. The dB reduction is about 30dB or so.

For .22LR in a pistol, it'll sound like a pneumatic staple gun.

If you shoot subsonic 9mm out of a carbine rifle, it's as loud as the action cycling!

.22LR in a rifle is as spooky quiet as you can get.

+1

and to add to that

When using a rifle with supersonic ammo you will definitely still want hearing protection. For a few shots it isn't to bad, but if your doing long strings of fire it can get a little noisy. Still much more pleasant, and the sound doesn't carry as far.

Depending on the firearm, can, caliber combo it could sound like a clap, a car door closing, or a pellet rifle. Where it's shot can change the sound also.

Youtube isn't the best way to hear a sound suppressor but it will give you some indication of what a suppressed firearm sounds like. I would recommend surfing around and watching some youtube videos.
