Picked up the cmmg .22 conversion kit for the AR15. Very nice. Took it to the outdoor range with no issues. Although, there are some down sides to the drop-in kit: The bullet has to travel a 1-1/2"+ before it gets to the rifling. The barrel twist on the AR gives about a 2-1/2 to 3" pattern at 50 yards, and at that range zero is about 1-1/4" lower than a .223/.556 round. On the plus side: the ammo is almost free, and I can take my AR and hunt in the palm of michigan this year. Originally, I bought this for my fiance to shoot, but it looks like i'll be needing two.

I want to see the look on some local's face when you are walking thru the woods with your AR while squirrel hunting. That would be priceless!

Yeah, cant wait. My buddy and I are betting on how many times I get to talk to the DNR while were hunting.

What is the round limit for .22? I know my Marlin holds 13 so I can't see the 5 round limit working there. Plus, the 10/22 comes with a 10 round magazine. The conversion mags are what, 25 round?

I do not believe there is a round limit for .22 rim fire in michigan. That also goes for bolt action and maybe pump shotguns. The DNR guidelines on round limits only applies to semi-auto rifles and shotguns. I'm about 99% sure. Don't quote me on it though, lol.

Just want to say "thanks" to ..DETROIT.. for posting your results on this conversion. I've considered purchasing the same conversion kit for my AR-15 and wondered how well the conversion kit would work. I gave no consideration to the bullet having to travel a 1-1/2"+ before it gets to the rifling, and the detrimental effect this could have on accuracy. As good as the idea is, think I'll pass on the conversion kit, as I'd like a little better accuracy. Maybe that's why the S&W M&P 15/22 and Colt's AR15/22 are so popular..

just for clarification..what AR did you use ? and what barrel length? twist ?
Thanks!...Joepistol..:pistols:

I use one in a S&W M&P 16" 1/9. No problems at all, just keep it lubed.

I have the stainless steel version and I would say I get a little better accuracy out of mine than the OP. Mine runs perfectly but I see a dedicated .22 UPPER in my future. :bounce2:

I've used the kit in a S&W M&P 15 with a 16-1/2" with a 1-9 pencil barrel and an Essential Arms 10-1/2" with a 1-7. Also, the kit says to not use remington rounds. It says the kit might not function properly. I already purchased the rounds prior to opening the kit, so I used them anyways. There hasn't been any mechanical problems as yet and I'm almost done withe the 525 round box. The remingtons I used have a small pin hole at the end which could also be a factor in the accuracy.

On a side note: part of the reason for the zero rise between the .22 and the .556 round in the same gun can also be contributed to slight muzzle hop from the larger round. When I held the barrel down on the bipod the difference was minimized.

I am going to be doing a .22 upper, because I want the proper twist rate and don't want the lead getting into the .556 gas system. A dedicated .22 barrell has no gas port and a twist rate of 1:16.

Try botach.

They have been removing the "add to cart" option on their out of stock stuff so it looks to be in stock.

I've been trying to find the CMMG or Spike's conversion. Any other links would be appreciated.

Has anybody had the Spike's? In pictures it looks a tad better made.

Botach had the stainless version (Bravo I think) for $199. Looks like they are out of stock at the moment. Getting used to the OOS. Firearm sites should all have a "sort by in-stock" feature. These days at least.

A complete upper replacement like the Chiappa .22 is the best way to ensure accuracy..besides, they are avail. for 300 $

I got my CMMG stainless Bravo conversion from PSA when they had the kit that included 3-25 round mags in stock for about a day. Haven't had a chance to shoot it yet - .22LR is too valuable to just shoot for giggles right now...

That is something I never thought I would ever hear anyone say.

I have a CMMG conversion kit and love it. The mags are a bit hard to load but I have had no functional issue with it
