Its not a pistol. Or a rifle or an AOW. That's the whole point.

It's just an AR pistol, right?

Nope its not federally classified as a pistol, rifle, AOW. It comes with a letter from the BATFE. However I do not know if it is Michigan legal.

any details on dimensions? I didn't see any in the article, but we could determine MI status with it.

Specs are at the bottom of the article: OAL=27.8"=Michigan Pistol

Barrel: 11.5″
Overall: 27.8″

MSRP: $1079.99

It said 11.5" barrel. I wonder if with the barrel it has to be registered as a pistol but the OAL is 26"? Hence getting away with a VFG because it's as long as a rifle legally needs to be.

Apparently they built it to make light of a loophole in the NFA Law. Anyway it is way expensive to just make a point of that, so I don't know how many will sell.

I am not real familiar with a Michigan AR-15 Pistol so I don't know how the price stacks up there either.

it's a legal trouble headache waiting to happen. AOW definition is not very well defined and doesn't talk about any 26" OAL requirements

still a pistol in MI

Wow, it falls in between everything; not a rifle, no shoulder stock, not a pistol, not a SBR, not an AOW. It would have to be registered as a "Michigan pistol"

BATFE Letter (http://www.franklinarmory.com/XO-26_Letter__c_.pdf)

It looks like all Franklin Armory did was to put a little longer barrel and VFG on one of their pistols and get it past the BATFE.

So what is concealable at the federal level mean. Can we make a AR on these specs. What about a car is it concealed.

IF registered as a "michigan pistol" wouldn't the front grip be a no-no?

NO. A vertical foregrip is ONLY a concern if the gun is classified as a PISTOL by the BATFE. Since this gun is NOT classified as a pistol by the BATFE, there is no law banning the vertical foregrip.

A "Michigan Pistol" is merely a legal creation by the Michigan legislature to force Michigan residents to register all guns between 26 and 30 inches. Michigan has NO law against installing a vertical foregrip on any gun.

While it is interesting conversation, I personally would not even think of putting something together that was going to test the waters.

What's a couple inches one way or the other to keep things safe. Stay out of the gray area and you don't have to worry.

While I completely understand your sentiment, my frustration with things like this revolve around the fact that these ATF letters are really pretty worthless.

They can and often DO change their minds.

Here is an article that articulates the frustrations that manufacturers must go through to meet the ATF's "requirements." (From the Washington Times no less.)
