What a shame to see that nice buck go down that way.

One really can't tell just how many coyotes there were. There were many more pics that were not shown. Its at night, the coyotes see better than the deer, there are more of them and they kept hounding it back to the same spot. Deer is alone with no backup. Its basically the same thing that hyenas do with much larger prey like Gnu's and in isolated cases, Cape Buffalo. Death by a thousand slashes (that was a Native American thing if I recall). Except that dogs eat you while you are alive... Nature is not a pretty thing.

I was out this morning and happened to be in the right place at the right time to see a coyote attack going down on some sheep. I had my 223 but it was still in the case and not loaded, so it was a mad scramble to get it out, stuff 3 bullets in the magazine, rack one in the chamber and take aim. I had not brought my rangefinder (misplaced it somewhere) and the distance was probably 250 yds and I was too stressed to apply sufficient kentucky windage.

I let rip with the first round and I don't know what happened to that animal, I didn't see it again. The second one took off to the east and stopped looking back and I sent another his way. I am guessing that one was low for sure and he took off again. He stopped again over 350 yards away on the crest of a hill, but I couldn't shoot since some of the farm buildings were in the background.

These situations happen fast. I went to try to track the first animal, but there was no snow on the ground and I couldn't tell which way it went. I'm guessing to the west where there is a swamp and it is on the neighbors property where I do not have permission to track animals. Given the reaction of the second yote, I think the first was wounded, but will probably never know now.

Anyway, exciting to see them on the farm for the first time and also to have prevented the imminent attack on the sheep. Disappointed that there was none lying on the ground... I "found" my rangefinder afterwards and will have to carefully range the area and now I am re-thinking getting a custom elevation turret for my scope for these 55gr varmint rounds.

I have been out on this farm at least a dozen times and have never even seen a coyote, so its a start..

Wolves can tire the strongest of deer. Coyotes need an edge.

Coyotes are the only K9 that will kill for the chase also. The Wolf kills to survive.

That is not true. There have been many cases in the UP of wolves killing an entire group of deer and then just leaving the uneaten carcasses.

It has happened twice on my friend's property.

Many yoopers are taking the shoot, shovel, and shut up method.

Perhaps farmer need to learn how to secure their livestock better rather then let them run around freely in pastures....

Yes its the wolves fault they got free access thru 3 wire electric fence......

True predator fencing properly installed below the frost line is cost prohibitive for most people, especially for many yooper farmers who barely make ends meet.

Delisting and proper mangement is the key.

You lost the argument with that reply. I'm sure you see differently.
