Amazing how you can be approved for a pistol permit at the police station in under ten minutes, and a CPL in about one month, but the BATFE, with the full extent of the law at their disposal takes around six months to approve a form 4 for a class III device. I just sent mine in about a week ago, financial reasons slowed me down, and it is a little agitating to know they are going to sit on that $200 payment for six months while they decide whether or not a person who has a MI CPL meets the requirements to own a suppressor. You have to love the speediness and efficiency of the federal government.

Personally, I think the delays are intentionally designed into the process to make things needlessly difficult to discourage people from ever applying in the first place. Take the CLEO sign-off as another example, it is an unnecessary hurdle that should have been eliminated 25 yeas ago, yet it remains, WHY?

How long can it possibly take to to run prints through the FBI, perform an NCIC check, and verify that the item being transferred is in the registry?

They could easily get things done faster if they really wanted to.

Imagine the nationwide outrage if it took the IRS six months to process a 1040.

I got some form 4's back today. They went in 8/25/11. 193 days. That kinda sucks. Got my Osprey's (9 and 45) and my Sparrow out of hock. ;)

Call up the ATF, the phone number is (304) 616-4500, have the serial number ready and ask to check the status of your form 4 or form 1. Once they get your information ask who your examiner is and any other info you want to know

Any idea if the wait time is the same as a form 4, or "special"?

I don't see why it would be different, but I don't always follow the intricacies of the BATFE either.

Ya, I got a call about one or two of those. Have them add the title and "on behalf of Sheriff..." and get it back to NFA and you'll be good. You don't loose your place in line for that.

That is great news! I was operating under the best information I had at the time but you are the second one who has had no problems. I am withdrawing my recommendation to register trusts.

I was in no hurry for the suppressor so I decided to make myself a "ginuea pig" and see what happened. Was somewhat curious as to the requirement on ATF's part to register a trust when the State does not require it.

Just found out I have a problem with my compliance form being filled out incorrectly. No idea on the specifics yet. I hope it isn't the same on all three (unless it is an easy fix).

UPDATE: My first two got gigged for the LEO title thing. Too bad I won't get back up there to get it fixed until next week. Maybe the third one will be there by then (odds are it will have the same problem, since it is the same sheriff). So I'll get it fixed and mail them back. Grrrr.

It came to my house. I have purchased 2 Colt M16's, 1 Bushmaster XM15E2, and a Mac-11 sub machine-gun, and a C&R Colt/Armalite AR15 Model-01 in the past, and all of the Form-4's came to my mailbox. I will have to drive over to my SOT dealer on Monday and show him the Form-4 and relieve him of my Suppressor. :-)

I went with the YHM Phantom 5.56mm Stainless quick detachable model. I am looking forward to shooting it without ear plugs.

Mine went pending Dec 7th but my form got returned with an error on the 21st. I was able to get it back to their office by the 24th where it continues to be "pending" in their system. Maybe I did get put back on the bottom :(

I just called the NFA branch, I got approved today. I mailed my paperwork on 11/20/11. On 4/22 I had to correct an error on the form 4, mailed back to the NFA on 4/23 and approved 5/2.

Now that I have my THREE applications back in my hand, I found out the problem is that the sheriff delegated them to the undersheriff...and the BATFE wrote that they need the signature of the "sheriff or chief of police" -- (and yes, I know they may be getting rid of that requirement). Soooo, tomorrow I head into town for the correct signature and then send it back in. Geesh.
***Clarification: The BATFE gal wants the sheriff's signature, while her helper (Chase) simply wants the sheriff's name printed above the undersheriff and the word "by" after it to show the undersheriff is the designated person. And the paperwork goes back to each individually! Since both LEO are out of the office right this week, I gave the paperwork to my suppressor manufacturer to handle with the BATFE. Hopefully they will get it squared away and expedited (and I applaud their assistance throughout this adventure).

Call the ATF and check the status. There may be a paperwork issue. Also, check your mailbox as the forms might be there for correction.

WooHoo! Got a message from Chewy last night. Went pending January 9, approvals delivered to Chewy May 10. Looks like they're picking up the pace- when I called in February to confirm pending status, NFA Branch told me not to expect anything before the end of June.

I think they have hired some assistants because when I got my error letter it came from some person named chason with the title "research assistant" instead of from Christina herself.

It certainly is helping clear up the back log and speed things along. Chason is a good guy and even helped "fill in the blanks" for some of our paperwork rather than sending out an error message. Hopefully in a nother month or two they'll be caught up and running normal.

Got mine a while ago and finally took it to the range yesterday over in Howell. My YHM QD 5.56 Phantom shot great with nice accuracy. The group size stayed the same as without the can installed but it did shoot about 1 and 1/2 inches low with the suppressor installed. And that stayed the same at 200 yards and 300 yards.

It was Awesome to be able to shoot full power 5.56mm ammo with no hearing protection on. The YHM Suppressor was very quiet and installed in the same position every time I took it off. The point of impact never changed when I took the can off and than attached it again.

Personally, I think the delays are intentionally designed into the process to make things needlessly difficult to discourage people from ever applying in the first place. Take the CLEO sign-off as another example, it is an unnecessary hurdle that should have been eliminated 25 yeas ago, yet it remains, WHY?

How long can it possibly take to to run prints through the FBI, perform an NCIC check, and verify that the item being transferred is in the registry?

They could easily get things done faster if they really wanted to.

Imagine the nationwide outrage if it took the IRS six months to process a 1040.

To let you know, I filed a amended tax return just after I received my check after noticing a mistake back in June of 2011 with a check for the difference. I just got a letter 2 weeks ago from the IRS asking what the check was for. Had it for 10 months and never processed my amended return!

Time is similar (Accroding to NFA Tracker).
Form 4's go to the dealer, no matter which entity applies for the transfer.

I have. But I am one of those that got in early (mid-October), got caught in the log jam, and then had them sent back for a signature issue they have since decided to accept, which meant sending them back again. So I had to take the long road, but they were approved (3 of them). I went via the manufacturer, skipping the dealer increase ;)

Mine was done as a individual on a form 4. Took about 6 months total. Paperwork was mailed to my dealer.

Mine was as an individual and I was approved last month. I went pending on Dec 7. There is no difference in approval time between individuals and trusts.

My check was cashed Feb 22. Went pending March 13th. The tracker shows est. October date, but judging by the recent paperwork flow increase, it looks like it may be sooner. I can't wait. I have a Gemteck .22 cal supressor ordered. :grin:
