What type of ammo do I shoot in this gun?

Here is what is says on the gun itself:

30 W.C.F.
157820
MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO
NEW HAVEN, CONN U.S.A. PAT. AUG. 21, 1891

The barrel measures a little over 25"

It has a flip up rear site and two holes above the lever, one on each side?

30 W.C.F. was Winchesters' name for the cartridge when it first came out. Union Metallic Cartridge came out with their version......Identical case dimensions...... and named it .30-30.

Guess which name stuck?

It's my wife's great, great grandfathers gun and that was the condition we received it. I know it would of been better in the original condition, but that's what we got. I am going to encase it in a display case on the wall and am looking for some original vintage Winchester 30 wcf ammo.

If ever in doubt at all about 'which cartridge' - take a chamber cast.

or ask?
its common knowledge that 30 wcf is 30-30. to those who have been around old winchesters at least.
if it were an odder caliber id say cast it but its already been answered and answered correctly, no point in recommending a cast at this point.
especially if its marked on the barrel and shown in pictures :-P

even refinished thats a gorgeous winchester. gene collects them ill see if he has an old box laying around!

Are you sure you want to shoot something this amazing in this good of condition? I agree with the encasing.

As long as its safe to shoot, there's nothing wrong with shooting that gun once in awhile. People shoot old Winchesters all the time. That's what they are made for. Unless you do something stupid a few rounds down the barrel every now and then are not going to hurt the condition or value. Plus, from a collectors standpoint, most aren't interested in refinished guns. Shoot it and enjoy it. Hanging it on a wall for the rest of its life would be a waste.

Just notice that the OP is over 1 1/2 years old. Then at about post #12 someone brought it back. He was just making posts to get his post count up to 10. That was repeated months later by another guy that is just posting to get his count up. Look at his posts, 9 of them in a 50 minute period, THIS MORNING.

This thread has died and been resurrected twice. The OP's question was answered and discussed in the first few posts, everything else has been people making comments on the later posts without reading the OP.
