I recently bought a couple of boxes of Hornady Superformance Match 223 REM 75gr BTHP.

The first box I opened, to look at, I see a polymer tipped bullet sitting in there amongst the hollow point bullets ??? Then I notice that the bullet is a smaller caliber and the shell is longer than the 223's, for the same overall length. Look at the headstamp and it is a 204 Ruger cartridge with a Vmax bullet in the same package as 19 more of the 75gr 223's.

I wrote Hornady last week and gave them the batch number of the ammo, in case this is more than a one time deal. So far no response from Hornady. In my case, the 204 ruger round would have loaded in the magazine, but would not have chambered. It still could have been an issue if it was on a follow up shot.

I don't know if there is some guy out there with a 223 round in his 204 Ruger package. That could be more "interesting" in an unpleasant way. You may want to check your own ammo, just in case.

Seems I read or heard somewhere that big stores like a Dunhams/Gander Mountain were having issues with people pulling a round out of a box and switching it with another caliber. Can't remember if it was on here or where I heard it at though.

Hmmmm, I wonder what's happening at Hornady.

They have a recall for the 500 S&W 300 grain FTX® Custom™ Pistol Ammunition but nothing about the .223, as far as I know.

Considering the potential consequences for a shooter, it wouldn't bother me all that much if all ammo was behind the glass so to speak.

That possibility seems far more likely than a different caliber round ending up in a box of ammo that was packaged at Hornady. I'm not saying it couldn't happen, but rounds from 2 different lines coming together seem unlikely.

Was the box sealed?? If it was then it is a factory problem, if it was not that some bonehead did bad things with the box on the shelf..

The fix would be tamper proof boxes!! or do what I do when I buy eggs open the carton and check them!!!

No, but dealing with some people's sense of humor who just think it is funny as heck to hurt other people I'll start double checking any ammo I buy off the shelf. This really looks like someone just was messing with the boxes on the shelf

".204, whats that?" (opens box)

"This looks like .223" (opens second box)

"Thats neat" (replaces cartridges into wrong boxes)

I always check my ammo first. Maybe it is just my obsessive compulsiveness kicking in....

As you can see from the label on the box, the way the label was applied at the factory does not seal the box. Usually, the label goes over the "free" end of the tab and thereby seals it. But the way Hornady put the label on, it leaves the box free to open without needing to break the seal.

No extra expense is needed to solve the problem, all they have to do is apply the label properly. Funny enough, their own unloaded bullets are packaged in such a way that one does have to break the seal, but Hornady does not do the same thing for loaded ammunition. It looks to me like a screw up several different ways.
