A Roanoke, Va., man and his wife were recovering after he accidentally shot himself and her during a firearms safety class.

The Bedford County Sheriff's Office tells media outlets that Michael L. Deel shot himself in the hand with a .45-caliber handgun.

The bullet also struck his wife, Michelle, in the leg as she was sitting beside him.

The incident occurred Saturday during a firearms safety class at a residence. The instructor, Thomas Starke, told police he'd left
the room and then heard a shot.

The Deels were taken to a local hospital where they were treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Michael Deel says the shooting was a "stupid accident."

Not the best idea, no, but we can't blame the instructor for this. A person free to manipulate a firearm can do whatever they want with it, including stupid **** like shooting your wife.

He broke all all of the four cardinal firearm safety rules. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

These are rules that all gun owners profess to know (I've never met someone who admitted they didn't know them), but it's only a very small percentage who actually follow them with discipline.

People SHOULD be smart enough not to shoot themselves or others.
It's not my fault someone acts like a moron just because I didn't treat them like one.

I've taken (2) classes in the past couple of months (one was my CPL class), both were instructed by a licensed NRA instructor. We were NOT allowed to have any ammo in the classroom portion of either class.

You can NEVER be too safe, especially when teaching people who have not been exposed to firearms. Just my (2) cents

It makes me wonder if the the NRA Safety Course instructors have a "black list" of those who should NEVER be allowed to own anything other than a BB gun? Then again, he might shoot his eye out.

There's no excuse for this! The fact is there really are people that should not own guns. Even if you are not familiar with guns and how they operate. Any buffoon knows when you pull the trigger they fire!

How do we know which class he was in? Might have been the shooting part of the class.

Sounds to me like someone needs to be banned from gun ownership.

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

It's just bad all round, sucks for the couple, for the people in class, and instructor.
