Well fishing will go up

Worried about the continuing arrival of new fish diseases, the U.S. government will spend $2.3 billion to build an underwater fence that will separate American and Canadian waters along the 1,100-mile length of the Great Lakes.

Stretching from Duluth, Minn., on Lake Superior to the head of the St. Lawrence River in northern New York, the fence will be funded by a $10 federal excise tax for 10 years on each fishing license sold in the eight states that border the Great Lakes, and a 1 cent surcharge on each minnow or worm bought by anglers.

What a joke.... And it is one ;)

The Department of Natural Resources announced that 2007 hunting and fishing licenses go on sale starting today. The prices for the licenses remain unchanged from 2006, however if a fee increase is approved by the Legislature later this year, it may take effect before next year, DNR officials said.

"We encourage hunters and anglers to purchase their licenses early this year if they would like to take advantage of the current prices," said DNR Director Rebecca Humphries. "We are continuing to work with the Legislature to develop a new license fee package that will likely see incremental increases spread over the next few years. Should the Legislature approve new fees, we hope they will be enacted immediately, but for now licenses remain at 2006 prices."

And that has not happened nor will it any time soon

Yeah, I was sure they did not go up. LOL

Even if they double I will still be fishing. It's something I like doing and if I have to pay a little more to do then so be it.

Watch for a couple of bills to be introduced by the Dems in the near future.

Structured increases aren't all that bad I hear BUT, the Proposal 1 funding for natural resources has not been addressed.

If fees go up so should the amount earmarked for natural resources.

Prop 1 from last fall had nothing to do with new funding. Prop 1 protected DNR funds, including the Game and Fish Protection Fund, from being raided by the state legislature and used for other purposes.

But, even with the increases the same $3.50 is earmarked and the fund doesn't see any more of the revenue generated from the increase.

I gotta believe that it was an oversight but....who knows?
