I always here something is better then nothing. Then some hate that phrase. At this point I am getting tired of hiding my guns when I'm not home or gone for a period of time. So I have been thinking its time for me to get a safe but my funds are limited (wife). What is your take on this safe.

I'm not sure this would be a better choice but also might be hard to convince the wife on expense......

One bit of advice I can give you is to get a decent vault and lock your guns up. You do not have to spend $1200, but you have to spend some money. Do a search in this thread for a bunch of good info. My house was robbed in 2011, while I was out of town. I was too overconfident and did not lock all my guns up in my vault. Those guns are now gone, while those in my flimsy vault are still there. The robbers went through EVERY room in my house and in every corner of my closets, tossing mattresses and book cases looking for long guns...they found them. Trust me-a decent vault and an alarm will slow anybody down.

Costanza

Thanks for the advise. I do keep my stuff at this time in someone's else's safe until I'm able to purchase my own. I feel better doing this for the time being but would like my own.

If you don't know you will be hard pressed to fit the amount that they claim will fit. My 2 cents will be go for the bigger one. If you go away you can put jewelry and other expensive items in there. You will also have room for the future.

I have a Cannon 48 gun safe that has about 15 long guns in it, along with important paperwork and records. It is fairly full and hard to get guns out. It is a good safe, but if a bigger Cannon was offered at a comparable price, I would have bought it. I know nothing about a Mesa safe. It looks sturdy, but is expensive for a 14 gun safe. The Cannon 24 gun safe. at 345 pounds, should be reasonably manageable going down(and, sadly, up) a staircase.

If I was in the market for another safe I would go with a Ft. Knox brand safe. They are a top notch American company who stands behind there safe. They warranty everything including the lock, paint, against fire, flood, physical damage If the safe is damaged or destroyed in any way they will replace it for free and upgrade you to the next size up. Really a top notch company.

They do have a safe builder on their site

I listen to a podcast called the Gun Dudes and they had the owner on and talked about all the options that are available.

Liberty safes are US made.

Tom Gresham's GunTalk.com used to have a discount, but I didn't see it on my quick glance.

Biggest baddest safe you can afford, but also consider having a less secure quick access safe close by.

Costco has the Big Horn safes on sale right now for $549 I think. I've heard decent things about them but there are certainly better options for more $. just an FYI...

I picked up a liberty fatboy Jr. from lowes 48 gun. 10% off coupon if you get the address change packet from the post office. Brings the price down to $1080. Had it delivered in the house by lowes for $35. Nice safe with plenty of room to grow.

Does anyone have recommendations for a smaller safe that will just hold 3-4 handguns? I've done some basic searching, and the reviews are all over the board on some of them.

Wall safes are secure from prying fingers, but so dang convenient.

What partdeux said. My main concern about small safes is that if two guys can carry it out of the house, they will. After all they know they've got something you were trying to protect. I'd suggest lag bolts at the very least if you think that a small safe is what's best for you. Just seems like the equivalent to a neon sign saying, "Hey the good stuff's in here" to me.

Erict,

I have spent a lot of time understanding the quality of safes and how they are made. Every brand out there has their entry level products including all the top brand names. The level of protection you need is dependent on what your trying to protect and what the potential for theft / fire is. Most safes actually earn their keep against fire as opposed to theft. However, with the state of our society I believe that could change. As I researched safes I discovered 3 things that led me to my last purchase. 1) Most of the safes on the market that you can walk in to a box store and purchase are made out of 10-12 gauge rolled steel and are no more than a security container. I saw one that thieves took a sawz-all and cut the corner off the safe and took out the contents 2) When these "safes" are pushed over on their back, many of them can be preyed open with two guys and crow bars in less than 2 minutes. Google "security on sale" for a video. 3) To get any real protection, you have to have a safe door that is a minimum of 1/4 inch plate steel, the side walls should be more than 12 gauge steel with a layer of drywall and the lock should have inner and outer re-lockers.

The safe I chose has a 1/2 in plate steel door, the walls have a composite material poured in them filled with hardened steel drill bits and files to deflect attempts to drill and cut. It weighs 1400 pounds empty is set in a corner and is tap-con'd to the floor. I'm sure there are thieves that given enough time could still get into it, but I feel confident that the average "smash - dash" crowd will not get into my safe.

Good luck with your safe purchase quest. Give up a little size for quality in the areas I've listed above, you won't regret it!. There's a great safe company over in Grand Rapids that I purchased through....PM me and I'll give you their name.

I bought one of these based on reviews and a couple of friends experiences:

http://www.totalsecuritystore.com/safes/docugem/DocuGem_PS250_Anti_Theft_Security_Safe

I still have it, unopened. Ended up keeping the handguns in a long gun safe! If you want it, PM me for price. I know this isn't the classified forum, hope there is no problem, mod? If there is, apologies in advance and I will edit this part out.

A friend of mine has a Liberty "made in usa" and it is nice at less than $1000.00.
Some liberty safes are made in china and imported.
And I think have a warranty if it is broken into, or a tornado destroys it, they will replace it free, with a police report.

it is a decent safe . I looked at som of the cannons before I bought mine. I recomend you double the size that you think you will need. it will fill up fast with probably more than guns . you can put the wife's valuables in there as well. that may help you to convince her to go bigger!

most of the sporting goods stores all sell the mini vaults. ideal for a pistol and spare mags or cash. you can get them keyed or digital. various sizes and price ranges . good for night stand, closets, trunk of your car, etc..

its like anything else, you get what you pay for and its better to pay a little more now, than to pay alot more again later.

Harbor Freight has some inexpensive, small safes. Bolt it to the floor!

I agree with other posts on size. best advise I got was think what you need or want and double it. you will be probably putting more than guns in it and they fill up quick.
