I've been fly fishing since I was about 12 or 13, mostly small land locked ponds and lakes. This year I decided to try a new challenge, and after a little research I learned the Huron River was a blue water small mouth river. Something that is a little unusual, but nothing short of awesome.

First day out there I caught literally 30 small mouth on a fly rod. Albeit most were very, very small. Even small smallies are fun on a fly rod though. As the season has progressed I've been successful in finding some bigger fish. Some on the fly rod, some on a spinning rod. All have been a blast. River Smallies are incredibly strong. Largest to date is a 19" fish. All caught and released.

Not many weekends left, but here are some pictures from this season.

In the 70's it was called the Urine river. I grew up on the banks of it. We would count the turds that floated by at one point. Its been cleaned up a lot since then.

It has from everything Ive read. (Never visited it before this year.) And in the last ten years its turned into quite a fishery.

Island lake area?

Nope. Middle Huron, further down. Island lake area is pretty froggy.

An 18" small-mouth bass on the end of a fly-rod is a blast!

Your cast in picture #5 looks like its heading in the right direction, underneath the overhanging brush on the opposite shore. Was the bank undercut?

It really depends on the time and conditions as to where the fish are. When that picture was taken the sun was high and hot, they tend to sit in the shade during those times, under the brush like you said.

The other night mayflies were hatching. I was standing in the river at dusk with fish jumping all around me. Pretty awesome to just watch
