Does anyone have any experience with an absolute co witness with an eotech 512 with a standard front sight post or do you prefer a 1/3.

Do they make a 1/3 qr mount?

As you can probably tell I'm new to this optic stuff

Let the conversation ensue!!!!

512? The whole world is moving to the XPS and you're looking for a 512? ;)

I prefer the lower 1/3 co-Witness personally. But what do I know. I still run a 516.

Of the riser's I've seen, I like the American Defense quick release. http://www.officerstore.com/store/product.aspx/productId/20610/American-Defense-Manufacturing-Eotech-Riser-Black/

Eotech XPS. It's an eotech that runs on one CR123 perpendicular to the recoil impulse of the rifle.

It's a better battery setup that eliminates the contact problems with the 512/517/516's etc. due to recoil.

Well poop. Already bought a 512

What's the price difference on them?

About $200 at retail prices.

You'll do fine with your introduction into red dots with a 512. It's a great starting point. By default IIRC, with an "F" marked FSP (Front Sight Post), it's co-witness. Which, again, if this is your introduction to dots, sights, etc. Rock it for a while, then if you wish, change it up later.

Zero it if for 100 yards using the battle sight zero method (youtube Travis Haley) and enjoy.

Take care of your 512, and you'll get a couple hundred for it in a year or two when you want to upgrade.

$160 or so.

Like I said, I still run a 516. So I haven't gotten around to doing anything about it yet.

I have a 512 and like it. AA batteries are easy to find. From what I understand the newer 512s (last few years) fixed the battery contact problem on the 512s. If you believe everything on the "internets",the transverse style batteries fail because they can't take the abuse of recoil sideways sowho knows. I use lithium AAs so they won't leak anyway.

My 512 is absolute cowitness, and that is how I prefer. If you use the mount the 512 already has it will absolute cowitness.

I personally like the 1/3 co-witness.

This EXPS has the built-in 7mm riser with quick detach.

Since you say you're new to optics; I hope you realize that with either setup, when using the iron sights, the dot will cowitness.

The diff. will be when using just the dot.

When using the dot with 1/3rd, the irons will appear to be below the dot but when you switch to the irons, they will cowitness.

When using the dot with absolute, the irons will always be in your field of view.

Just saying in case you were unaware.

I prefer 1/3rd.

I would think 1/3 would be less clutter in the FOV especially since i'm running a standard front sight block. But i'll give absolute a try for now and see whats up.

I use a EXPS2-0. I prefer the sight with the riser as I don't cram my face into the stock/buffer tube to look through the site.. I just stand normal and bring the rifle to my shoulder and the site comes right into my line of sight.
Results may vary due to persons own dimensions :)
