View Full Version : FORUM SCHEDULED DOWNTIME, MARCH 8th-15th

zigziggityzoo
03-03-2014, 09:25 AM
Hi all,

on March 8th, I will be beginning the process of migrating MGO to a new server, and upgrading the forum software.

I am scheduling one week of downtime for the forums, to ensure I have enough time to fully test and debug the upgrade.

Beginning on March 8th, the forums will be TURNED OFF. no posting, no PMs, no browsing will be possible during this time. Once the forums are off, I will begin the migration process.

Once the migration and upgrade is complete, we will begin the process of informing the internet of our new home. This is a technical change that requires 24-48 hours while the Name Servers for each internet provider is updated. Once YOUR name server is updated, you will see the new forums. As this process is out of our control, some users will have access before others will. For instance, Comcast may update their name servers within 6 hours, and AT&T may take as long as 36 hours.

Regardless, within 48 hours of the switch, you will see MGO on its new home.

While I do not expect the switch to the new servers to take a full week, I am giving myself that much time in case something goes wrong, or something comes up in my personal life.

So remember, this coming Saturday, it's going down. Don't panic!

I hope this doesn't shock the 50+ new paid up members from the last week who will looking for the forum and the hundreds we directed to the forum looking too! :)

But great to hear the upgrade is happening!!! I had planned to make some changes in the AC committee forum, I'll wait until after the change over.

Thanks Zig!!!

Just a suggestion, make the announcement bigger and / or put it up in the banner crawl and get it up on Facebook.

Question, what will people see when click on the current url during the change over ?

Per your suggestion, the font size of the announcement has been increased.

We will probably have a static announcement page that will show when trying to access the site/URL.

Set the DNS A record TTLs to 300 now. Only a handful of nonconforming DNS servers will ignore that 5 minute value.

you can set NS records that low too if you are switching nameservers but if the same zones exist on both sets of name servers TTL will be irrelevant.

Looking forward to the update.

Unfortunately, our old (current) host doesn't let us set the TTLs ourselves. I checked yesterday, and they were not keen on changing it for us.

the A records were already at 300TTL and the NS records are, of course, 86400. They are "looking into" making that shorter for us, but couldn't promise anything.

This should be fine.

As long as both sets of name servers (assuming you are moving them) have the records up to date the 300 TTL should work fine on the old one and the change over to the new ones should be invisible anyway as they give the same answers.

I would expect that old school 24-48 hour time window to be reduced to minutes, thats my experience in the configuration you describe.

zigziggityzoo
03-05-2014, 10:08 AM
Hey Zig, do you have a short list of features we can expect to see with the upgrade?

There are two primary reasons for the upgrade:

To patch security holes (helps prevent spammers)
To move away from our current web host (will hopefully cut down on unexpected outages)

While there should be some benefits on the side (Increased availability of forum plugins, such as Tapatalk and ForumRunner, or ecommerce plugins), Those, for now, are not the primary goal.

Our first goal is to get the forums online and stable on the new servers, and restore existing functionality and customizations. After that, we'll look into getting more stuff working.

I'm pretty sure that's standard for the software. I guess it's better for most to have the option. I like my organized chaos of the desktop site on my phones and Ipads.

It should only advertise it once when you first visit a site that offers it. That is how it works with other sites I frequent. Now, if you toss your cookies, it may happen again...but I don't experience it coming up every time I visit those sites.

There used to be a charge for the end-user to download Tap-a-Talk, but a few weeks ago, they eliminated it. I downloaded it, tried it...hated it. But...it will be an option here for those that want it.

Mobile search engine searches are expected to out number desktop queries by next year. Mobile based sales have already overtaken desktop sales, and Google is recommending a streamlining of websites, focusing on mobile usage 1st, and multi-platform compatibility 2nd(called by Google "responsive web design"). I would assume that MGO has made every effort to become more mobile friendly.

I am excited MGO is upgrading. Congratulations are in order!

Lets just sit back and let the :hardhat: begin.

Keep in mind, we have a "mobile style" available (at the bottom of the forums where it says "vB4 Default Style")...it isn't fully setup yet, but it does format the display nicely on mobile browsers.

Currently, the FORUM perks are:

Ability to upload/display a custom avatar
Ability to display a signature
Double the PM capacity
Ability to upload attachments to MGO's server and display them in posts
Ability to see/post to the "Members Only" forums
Ability to post in the "Commercial Dealers" forum (for commercial members)
Ability to utilize "Tap-a-Talk"
Ability to "Blog"

Beyond the FORUM perks...
You are also a member of the organization. As such, you have the ability to vote on various issues relating to the organization (including BoD Members, etc).
You also get special discounts and/or ability to purchase from affiliated organizations such as CMP (discounts at Dunhams, etc).

It's possible to add more styles, but I don't know if that's in our roadmap just yet.

I planned on looking into a "black background" alternate style (requested a few times over the years)...BUT...I haven't even finished the default one yet!! LOL!

Next one will be the default mobile style/skin setup...

OK, I lied...I got to playing around with creating a "Night Vision" style this afternoon/evening...it's not perfect, but pretty close (some navigation graphics are too dark to show properly against the black background).

You can try it out at the bottom of the screen...drop-down list where it says "--vB4 Default Style" (just above the Google Search box) (Select "Night Vision).

Zigziggityzoo...do NOT select the vB3 Incompatible Style...TRUST ME! (it doesn't show up for others, including SuperMods/etc...just us).
(I just know he's going to try it anyway!!)

Holy crap this is awesome! I was secretly hoping that when the forums came back online they would be black but I knew we'd stick with white. I didn't know you could have multiples, that's pretty cool. Good work!

We need a new tab logo for night vision.

EDIT: I tried it. Thankfully I figured out how to switch it back real fast.

Very cool. Thanks. No I won't be bothering my wife while browsing in the middle of the night, while she sleeps right there all up in my space... Thank you. Great job on the site (even without the black...

I checked, but did not find any restrictions for .png avatar files....so I would think it would work (if not, try .gif)

Currently, the FORUM perks are:

Double the PM capacity

Any chance of this perk going up? 200 feels pretty good. :)

The issues of concern are:

Storage space --- this would easily add another 200MB of data on top of the existing/building data stored on the server. Granted, at face value, "what's the big deal about that?"...we have to be conservative on the amount of data storage space we allocate for things like this.

Backups --- already, it takes several minutes/hours to run a full backup, so every bit counts in increasing that time.

And...I'm sure it wouldn't take long for the next request..."can it be increased to 400?"

Bottom line...it's not out of the question, but we have to walk before we run on this new server...we no longer have "unlimited" resources...each element comes with a price tag now.

Bing bang boom... can't ask for more than that... ;)

100 Actually isn't bad, but I do like to keep a running record of whom I"ve done business with... I get the rationale for why it is like it is though..

The 100 pm limit is not really a problem, just download vBulletin reader, ( do an internet search ) then download pm's in XML format and you have a archive of them, easy to search and read! I do it all the time, it's great to be able to go back through past pm's to look things up.
