What magnification do most of you use on your ARs? I was looking at a 3X9X40. Would this be a good choice for target shooting?

Forgot to add that I am on a budget of <$200 or so.

Have this on my AR, and for punching paper, it works great, and is a good deal for the money.

I use a Nikon P223 3x32, but it also comes in a 3-9x40 version.
Also, maybe check out something like a Bushnell 1-4x24.

I went with the P223 in 3x because of its compact size compared to traditional/higher powered scopes.

depends on what your shooting and range? a 3-9x40 should be good for target and hunting out to about 200+ yards IMO have 3 bushnells 3x9x40 on .22lr, 30-06, muzzloader work well. check out nikkon or Vortex they both seem to have nice glass.

I have Nikon 4.5-16 on most of mine. I have a preference for side focus. They are slightly above your budget constraints but worth it.

:yeahthat:

I think the 3x9x40 would be a good choice if you are "target" shooting at a 100 yard range.

I have the fixed 3 power P223 and like it a lot but it's not for target shooting.

I can attest to the two who put the P223 3X on. I put one on my new build because I had it lying around and it isn't a target scope but it will get the job done. It's clear and tracks well.

I have used my Leupold VX-1 3-9X40 on my AR and it worked great.

Mine has an EoTech with a Vortex 3x FtS magnifier on it, works great for me, and the wife's AR has a Burris MTAC 1-4...great little scope for the money...

Had a vx-1, have a vortex crossfireII for the AR. For the money, I prefer the crossfire. It was under $200 (cannot remember exactly what I paid) has adjustable objective and is very clear.

I also have the Nikon p223 fixed 3 power 32mm scope on my at. As stated, its tough to see holes in paper at 100 yards or more, but reactive targets work. I love how clear and compact it is. Its also extremely "quick" to focus in on close targets, I do shoot close quarters with both eyes open. The BDC is pretty much worthless, as the first holdover is over 300 yards, which isn't what a 3 power is for, but its unobtrusive enough.
