How is the hunting? How do the deer look?

I'm look forward to Nov. 15, so your observations are important.

I click on THIS (http://www.snowmancam.com/640x480.htm) site every morning and a few times in the evening. The guy puts corn out everyday and all sorts of critters come to eat.
This year, there has been a noticeable lack of deer.
He's in Gaylord.

My cams are showing lots of does and smaller bucks. I would say more than in previous years. I haven't been out yet because I'm behind on getting firewood laid in for the winter.

Your gear (whatever it is) wasn't powerful enough.
Had you had the newer more powerful rig, you would not have missed & it would have dropped in its tracks.

It wasn't the gear and it wasn't a "hail mary".

I took the crossbow up to the house and set up what I thought was the distance,it was spot on.I do have a brand new range finder in my bag now.

Put a arrow in a 2 point this morning. Not a great hit and it ran to the guy hunting behind me. I am positive he got my deer.

they don't , need one badly .
good to see some guys are bagging some already. I usually wait for 3rd week to hunt and have some small bucks on camera so far. I was wondering how bad the last winter would affect the population . I'm guessing to farther north the worse.
Put up some pics

Had one standing in my side yard about an hour ago.
About 10 yds off my deck.

Really?? Ive been hunting for over 33 years and never used a rangefinder for bow or firearm.. Ive missed my share :( but not because of range estimation, more like human error or maybe buck fever... That is where that thing called practice under hunting conditions comes into factor..

Nice looking doe. Should get plenty of meat from her.

I'm hoping to get out this weekend. I've been focused on bird hunting so far this season, but its time to get a deer in the freezer.

Getting plenty of meat. We process our own and try not to waste anything. What we don't eat we grind up for the dogs. They don't mind all the sinew, tendons, and bloodshot stuff. We render the tallow for suet cakes for the bird feeders.

Shot this 8 point Thursday night, also watched a big ten point run off opening night with my arrow sticking out. Never found blood or my arrow but my brother saw him still alive a few weeks later right at dark.

I took a pic of the stuff we feed to the dogs. Including the grinding, it takes us about 8 hours to process a skinned, gutted deer. We grind the dog burger last. We don't want the meat we eat to have more that a little silverskin or tallow, so we trim that off as we process the deer. There is also other stuff that most commercial processors wouldn't grind into your venison burger, not even for sausage. If you've ever processed your own, you'll probably know what I mean when I say 'jelly blood' and 'cellophane'. The jelly blood is located around the wound channel, where the blood saturates the meat and coagulates in any spaces it can get into. Cellophane is the thin, clear, stuff you cut through to separate the muscles in the legs. There is also a lot of meat that's just too thin to waste time scraping away from the fat and silverskin. In addition, there are tendons, cartilage, blood vessels, lymph nodes and other stuff that gets trimmed off the meat. Except for huge chunks of tallow, anything that isn't too hard for the grinder or too dangerous for the dogs gets ground into this stuff for them. This doe was shot low through the heart and had a lot of bloodshot meat in the flanks and one foreleg. We got about 16 pounds of dog burger from it.

We package it in one pound balls just like the good venison burger, but label it 'dog food'. My wife has fed it to them raw, which they love, but she usually boils the whole pound and then mixes it into their dry food for the next week or so. If we need more room in the freezer for any reason during the winter, the dog burger comes out and sits outside in coolers.

I never did that (save meat for the dog) when my dog was alive, but she sure liked eating off that carcass. I do believe that she was as excited as a kid on Christmas when I let her at a fresh carcass.
My wife always worried, but the dog - she LOVED her some raw meat!

According to my wife, chewing on raw bones is better for them than chewing on cooked bones. They certainly feast at gutpiles and discarded carcasses when they find them in the woods. Sometimes they drag home the foulest stuff.

Yesterday I decided to put up another ladder stand, a real shorty, as I have a couple just sitting around and would like to hunt in a couple other areas on our farm property. I had to trim a couple of limbs with a hand saw and drove it out there with the Gator. So, needless to say I made all sorts of noise in the process. I decided to hunt the stand and sat down about 20 minutes after pulling away on the Gator. I was convinced that I was making a mistake as I had just produced noise equivalent to a rock concert setting up the stand but about 20 minutes later I heard deer moving in the swamp. I saw a doe and heard a buck grunting at her with her responding with a bleet. About 20 minutes later I called him in and shot him a bit further back that I would prefer. The string hit my left arm when I shot so maybe that's it, or maybe it was just a bad shot. In any event, he only went 40 yards or so.

Nice one. I've noticed in the past that putting up a new stand often leads to action on the same night. The noise probably made the doe want to see if anything good to eat showed up in the area. Many times I've cut trees down with a chainsaw and then hunted nearby and seen deer come in.

Punch out for the year? I will hopefully still be hunting right up until the last day of the late antlerless hunt. There are only two seasons in Michigan, deer hunting season and preparing for deer hunting season.
