My father in law passed away around Thanksgiving and when we were cleaning out his attic i came across some old trapping equipment. Some of it I can figure out on my own, some of it I have never seen before and was hoping to find someone on here with more experience on the subject that lives near to fenton to help identify and show me how to use it. I can't take any pictures at the moment but will add some tomorrow. Pm me if you are willing to help me out. Thanks for looking.

Wish I lived closer.

Could go to michigansportsman forum and ask there. Youd have to register..

I was able to find some markings on the stuff that i couldn't identify when i first found everything. I now know what everything is that i have. Thanks for all the replies. I think i am going to try to pick up a few books and try to read up on trapping and maybe give it a shot if fur prices ever come back up enough to make it worth my time.

Most trappers live by the adage--"we spend 100 bucks to make 50"... you don't want to start thinking you will make $$$

I didn't figure i would get rich off of it, i just don't have much extra time or money for a new hobby right now.

It's funny, I had picked up a few of the small old traps at a garage sale and used them in my garage where I know some critters like to try to hide and make homes... One night, one of them managed to spring the trap, drag it out of the garage, chew through the rope that was tying the trap in place, and run off with the trap and part of the rope.
I should have used a bigger trap, I guess. Or better rope.

Rope won't cut it, you need chain like thes pictures have. I have had crtiers chew off a leg to get away. I quite shortly after the day I got two skunks. :-)

So you have some stretchers-then wire thingys. Small for muskrat-big coon.

Traps are probably #3 jumps-the big ones w/ the drags (funny shaped hooks) and the small one w/ the V in the pan-#1 for the (musk)rats. The #3s-coyote-kind b ig for coon/skunk. Could be for fox.

Looks like some single coil coon traps and some muskrat traps. Stretchers for rats and coons as well.

Trapping is a bunch of fun but it takes dedication to go check your line every day no matter how you feel or the weather.

If it is something i decide to try, I wouldn't do it without putting all the effort in it demanded. I just need to read up on all the laws on when and where i can trap. I've been doing a bunch of research online and it looks like it would be fun to get into. I will more than likely end up getting into it, i just want to make sure I know at least a little about what I'm doing before i go out setting any trap lines

Most row farmers will welcome you. Especially if they have corn in the fields/area you're interested in, at least around here.

Come springtime, look into the DNR sponsored trappers education program. Its extremely useful, extremely inexpensive, and for the money you get nothing but solid solid info and advice from experienced trappers volunteering their time. You also get a trap or two, some beginning supplies, a book on trapping (a good one that trappers refer to) and a 3 ring binder with all the class materials (which is loaded with more good info).

You won't be sorry you took it.
