What is your objective in painting?

If it is a waterfowling piece or the like, just rattle can it after proper surface prep.

Its rusty and nasty looking so i was going to sand it down and paint it. Wont normal paint get removed with gun cleaning chemicals?

Nope.

Just make sure that the surface is oil free before you paint it.

Rusty metal primer or heck, just flat grey primer depending.

Top coat to suit your preferences.

Besides, touch up is easy too....

Being cheap, I painted my FAL with black grill paint and baked the parts that would fit in the oven. It's not heavily used, but it's still nice and black.

I have had excellent results using Brownell's baking lacquer as well as their AlumaHyde II. The AlumaHyde II is an epoxy and you should wait at least a week before handling the part to allow the epoxy to fully cure. Engine paints usually are not formulated to stand up to gun cleaning solvents.

Sorry to hi-jack the thread. I was thinking of painting my shotgun. What would hold the paint better, a wood or synthetic stock set? I have both on hand.

I rattle canned my A-5 but, I put synthetics on before I did it.

Paint seems to be holding quite well and it has been years.

I've used black grill spray paint, worked fine. Can't say now, as I don't have the gun anymore, but while I had it, it worked good. No baking.

I dont really think you need to clean the outside of gun anyway just a rag with tiny bit of oil to get rid of rust.

I like Duracoat its easy to use and I think they sell a throw away sprayer too, Its pretty tough I used it on my AK I built and my mosin. I think the paint with the sprayer can be had for under fifty bucks

Denatured alcohol, get it in the paint dept. of any store. It doesn't stink up my basement like brake cleaner, and it can be used to clean a multitude of things in the shop. And, it evaporates faster than brake cleaner, with no aerosol can to dispose of when empty.

They all look great, but that VZ24 looks awesome!! I love the "digital" style paint jobs.

Ah the VZ24 308 stainless fluted heavy barrel, love that one two I actually built 2 identical for friends of mine when I was stationed at Fort Meade.

The pattern I made from cutting out cardboard. the stock is a lower half cheap ATI 65.00 stock I glass bed and stiffened up the for fore end, sand it painted it with car trunk paint for texture and then use Krylon the snake skin pattern on the other rifles I sprayed through the metal screen from my sand blaster as a pattern.

fmsniper, do you post on the 'hide? Some of your rifles look familiar? I've been posting over there for a few years and was just recently directed to this website by another 'hide member who I shoot longrange with.

fmsniper, you ever get anything from mlammers? From the look of his stuff it is way sweet, I've thought of having him build me a rifle , well if I had the funds I would have one all ready.

I talk to Mark off and on but I never got anything from him, he does good work.

Mark and I are both working on making a 6.5 M1 Garand, I am having McGowen LLC make the barrel should be done by the time I get home from Iraq, mine is a Barrel receiver from CMP, using BM59 magazine fed lower, barrel is 6.5x55, I will be modifying a BAR magazine for the 6.5..and a top mount scope base I will Make..should be interesting.
