I'm considering the purchase of a Vortex Diamondback or Viper scope for my Grendel AR. Does anyone have experience with these units? Also, is the side focus really any better than a front mounted parallax adjustment?

Its easier to reach the side mounted focus adjustment and you can read the focus scale from the shooting position ? Front focus adjustment is for use on a range - target shooting. Not that good for use in the field... I have several Vortex scopes and like them a lot. But I would be cautious about buying the cheapest chinese made scopes they sell. I have the PST and HST models and in that category they are very good for the money as compared to what you can get from anyone else.

i have the diamondback 4-12x44 and the Viper pst 1-4x24 and like both very much. it seemed to me that you got a little better adjustment for longer range with the side mounted adjustment. i think Vortex makes some nice glass for the cost. i would recommend them and continue to buy there products. apparently have a great warranty but i have yet to use it.

Vortex makes some really good optics on the higher end, but i wouldn't go with a lower model than the PST. the lower end models are made in the phillipenes and are junk.

The Bushnell shown above is a pretty good optic for the money.

I have a Viper PST 1-4X24 on my SR762. Has held zero well, and has worked for me out to 400 yards. Haven't had a chance at any longer distances.

The "illuminated" reticle is worthless in daylight. Just not bright enough.

Overall, I'm happy with it.

Sightron and Vortex are fantastic. Sii or better for sightron and Vortex PST or better and you can't go wrong.

Don't think more power is better. Buy a good Reticle and a decent power. You'll thank me later.

I have a Viper HST 6-24x50 on my .338, so far so good. Although my use of optics is min, my dad seemed to have good things to say about it.

I have a diamondback 4x12x40mm and it is fair at best, fish eyed around the edges and only good at 7 power for max anything beyond 7x is worthless.. Last one I will buy.. I have a Busnell AR-223 in 3x12x40 with side focus on an AR and it is far better than the Vortex.. Just got a Burris 4.5x14x44 A/O and it is great, good glass and clear at all power ranges.. Will buy more Burris products for sure...

What is your price range, how much shooting do you plan on doing with it, at what ranges, what type of shooting?

This is the first time I've seen so much criticism of the Vortex scopes. I need enough power, usually 10X, to whack prairie dogs and other assorted vermin at long range. Size and weight are also a consideration. I don't have a specific price range, but would like to keep it under $500. What say you?

To the last poster, if you go with the 4-16x44 HST scope http://www.opticsplanet.com/vortex-viper-hs-t-4-16x44-vmr-1-riflescope.html Then use the coupon code 10FSALE to get 10% off the list price which is $569. That gets you very close to your target price. Opticsplanet potentially has more / better discounts available, see the link posted.

The Vortex Razor is a sweet scope too. A bit on the higher end, but well worth the money. You also can't beat Vortex 100% unconditional guarantee. If it breaks or you even it shoot it by mistake, they will either fix or replace it.

I have several Vortex scopes and have never had any issue with them. Best buy for the money, period!

I have a Vortex T Shirt they shipped me for shipping the wrong base for a SPARC.
That SPARC was a replacement for one that didn't work out of the box.

I had a 2-7 x 32? Crossfire that was just OK

Leupold and Burris have nice warranties also.

The Crossfire was traded for a Rossi Youth matched pair 22lr/20 gage

Mine is a Gen I but it is flat out amazing. I replaced a Leupold LR/T with it and couldn't be happier.

Only reason I like that Bushnell is that it will allow me to have fun with tactical comps like out in Blue Water, and still shoot FTR.

For vortex scopes, don't go below PST or HST. The scopes below that level are pretty low quality. I guess not too different from other scopes in their price range though.

I LOVE bushnell- when they gave me a free spotting scope because they mixed up my military discount order and it got delayed 8 weeks, I was sold. They went far above and beyond what was needed to make things right. Plus, their tactical scopes (mainly the DMR based/styled scopes) are an incredible bang for the buck with their mil discount!

Vortex is all I will use.
Been running them for almost 10 years now. Binos as well as rifle optics. Just put a SpitFire on my AR and love it. Lighted, green or red as well as etched reticle at 3x.

Warranty is the best in the business. A very high quality glass at affordable prices.

I would highly recommend them.

Vortex is the only optic I will run. I have a Diamondback HP 3-12x42 on my Remy 700 custom KS mountain series and love it. Then I have a 2-7x32 Crossfire 2 on my 10/22, a 3-9x40 Crossfire 2 on my Weatherby 308, and 4-12x44 Crossfire 2 on my savage 110 7mag. They are great scopes for the price and the clarity is amazing. I did have a Crossfire 2 in a 6-24x50 AO but I couldn't stand the AO at the end of the scope, my Diamondback HP has it on the side and it is much better.

I have a 1-4x24 PST that I purchased from another member on here. So far I really like it for the intended use, very good clarity for the price range. I was actually a little hesitant to buy it when looking at optics only because I knew so little about Vortex, but now I wouldn't hesitate to buy another. I am rather partial to Leupold too, admittedly they'd be my first choice.
