First I will suggest the idiotic:
You have a Flying Jackalope problem, it is a little early for the "rub"

Next I would suggest the mystical. You have La Chupacabra, run for you life!

But if the damage looks like this:

Then the problem is most likely this:

Seriously.

That does not look like an animal did the damage. Most likely lightening or another tree fell and scraped it earlier in the year.

Sometimes I sit around at my desk feeling sorry for myself because of all the idiots I deal with daily. Then I come on MGO and read the replies on a thread like this and get a good chuckle and it makes everything all better lol

I like to think the reason I have so many friends is because I make them feel good about themselves. How I do that is something I try not to think into too much.

And the sad thin is you know you're going mad when a simple "bush did it" or similar comment makes you crack up lol

That my friend was most likely a black bear.In Lake Orion I doubt it. Besides where are the tell tale claw marks I see none.
Lightning.

First, is the picture dramey82 posted the picture of papabears' tree?

Then, does papabear live in Hillsdale county?
No black bear there and few porkies.
Of course we can just continue with the random shots in the dark if you want.

In recent years black bears have started to reappear in southern Michigan, usually in late spring or summer. In early summer 2005, a young male black bear was found near Reading, in Hillsdale County.
