I have a few lever guns and I'd like to have scope on a at least one for deer season. I have a couple 3x9 rifle scopes but they are kind of large and defeat the purpose of a light handy lever action. They are all 100 yard guns or so, a 30-30, 44 magnum, and 35 Remington. The point of all this is does anyone have a smaller scope they like on these? Somewhere in the 1-4x range?

I know I can google all the options but I would love to hear recommendations on what you guys might think. Also I'd like to participate in the forum a bit :-)

Red dot. Best way to go with a lever action.

If you mount it low you need a hammer extension since your thumb won't fit under the eyepiece to get the spur.
I have a scout scope on my 45-70 but a std 2x-4x fixed is perfect for 100 yard use on a lever gun.
My BLR 300 mag has a 3-9x but that can go 200 y easy
Red dot is not a bad option if you can live with 1x

I just put a Williams peep sight (5D-94/36) on my .35 Rem. Will be trying it out tomorrow.

I would go with this on a 30-30

Weaver 1.5-4 x 20 mm Classic Handgun Gloss Black Duplex Variable Scope

and mount it this way.
No-Drill Scope Rail

That rail looks like a huge improvement over the weaver side mount I have now.

I have a weaver handgun scope I could mount right up there too.

I have a Leupold VX-I
2-7x33 on my 30-30. Good glass, lifetime warranty, no batteries to worry about. Nice and rugged just like a levergun.

I wouldn't go any larger than a 2-7, lost of good brands I have a Nikon pro staff 2-7 and it works well. You might also go with something in the 1-4, there are may 1-4 options out there but I LOVE the 1-4 Leupold I have on my ar, great clarity at close range and enough zoom to make shooting out to 200yds with some level of accuracy possible. If you are shooting under 100 yards a 1-4 might be your best option.

Red dot on a scout mount. Pointless to have magnification on a .30-30 and especially pistol cartridges unless you on have serious vision issues.

Honestly, a good peep sight is accurate enough out to 150 yards for deer and similar game.

FWIW I have an XS aperture on my winny 94 and can hit a paper plate religiously out to 200 yards. It's quick to get on target, lightweight, non intrusive and very effective. Compliments a lever gun very well.

One tidbit to add...
Many of my opportunities deer hunting have come during low light. The main reasons I added glass to my 30-30 was to scope for antlers and be able to aim effectively during those first and last minutes of legal shooting hours. If low light were not a consideration, I would have gone with a good set of peep sights. Skinner makes great sights and even a red dot mount if you choose that route. http://www.skinnersights.com/1895_sight_4.html

Take a look at the Burris line of scopes. I have a Signature 1.5-6X on my lever action, and it has a red dot that can be turned on with brightness control, for dim lighting conditions. It is a fairly short scope, so it doesn't look strange on the rifle. A very nice product. Mine is several years old, so I don't know what their current offering in a similar scope is, but their optics are very good.

I have had a Burris 2-7 Mini on my BLR 358 for about 20 years...light, compact, and gathers light very well for its size..
But I have been contemplating moving my Burris 1.5x6 Signature Electro-Dot over to it though..
