To say setting up a simple dinner in Ann Arbor has been a challenge is a major understatement. Twice we've had venues agree to host our dining party and then cancel on us. Our first venue was very excited to host us but soon after posting our event on Facebook the owner was harassed by those who detest guns, forcing him to cancel. We can only speculate why our second venue canceled. We talked to numerous owners and managers of Ann Arbor based restaurants who support our message or just wanted the added business yet none of them expected the community to be tolerant and feared backlash. So we are taking away the one tool these rabid anti-gun, anti-freedom folks have; the power to intimidate private business owners.

We are removing the innocent business owners from the equation, saving them from intimidation tactics simply because they chose to allow law abiding citizens to gather for dinner. It is for these reasons we are hosting our dinner September 29th at 6:30pm in Gallup Park in the "Wooden Shelter". Now there will be no private business to intimidate, there will be no business forced by an intolerant community to make the choice between freedom of association and financial ruin.

While our original event had a small profile, we’ve now decided a larger one is in order which is why Michigan Open Carry has joined with Michigan Gun Owners for pizza in the park. We will provide pizza, pop and water (no brands will be publicized lest there be a campaign waged against those companies).

You may recall that MOC is currently engaged in a lawsuit against Clio Area Schools, while MGO has a similar one against Ann Arbor Public Schools. There will be a donation jar available for those who have the means and wish to donate. We look forward to seeing you there.

Depending on how big, parking may be an issue. I recommend using the lot east of Huron Parkway and walking OR drive through the Gallup park entrance to the west of Huron Parkway and driving all the way around to the back lot.

For those who may come from out of town, I thought this would be helpful. This park is also across from Huron High School for those that came out for the board meetings in spring. I imagine parking can be had there and then walk if able and needed.

Open minded citizens in A2?

At 6:30 p.m. Friday, a member of Michigan Open Carry told a reporter with The News that the group is now planning a pizza dinner September 29th at 6:30pm in Gallup Park in the "Wooden Shelter".

Prepare for the unexpected!

Hey, just as the gun community doesn't like to be branded by the actions of a few, let me remind you there are quite a few of us Ann Arbor and community gun owners here as well.

Well I cross posted to some related social groups. So hopefully.

Suggested to several groups on Meetup.
Two have scheduled it.

IM'd Ann Arbor Arms to see if they would cross post and/or perhaps send a rep.

Hit FB with something along the lines of:

Hope it's ok to share this here, considering Open Carry can be the only means for the poor or women in need to quickly legally carry for defense, I am hoping your subscribers in the area might join us.
Here is their chance to meet with and learn more about Open Carry and firearms rights in general. Come out, bring your family to this free picnic at the Maas Shelter, Gallup Park on 9/29 @ 6:30pm.
Just as with the schools the hoplophobes have done everything in their power to be disruptive and blame gun owners. Come and be a part of this fun family event. Come show them that gun owners in the Ann Arbor Area not only exist but look just like them (but behave better)

Let's try not to make enemies of the business owners. The drama is not their fault and boycotting them only helps the antis.

Please instead go there, let them know you are gun owners and still support them. Make it so the next time the antis can be brushed off like dandruff.

The second venue closes normally closes at 3pm, he was going to reopen at 630pm just for our special party, unfortunately he could not get enough staff to come back to open up for us

This sounds great, I'm planning on bringing my three daughters to their first open carry event. Unfold the stroller, Sling the AR, and eat pizza with like minded 2A supporters....in Ann Arbor!.. It just does not get any better.

Not really. There's a small one-lane bridge you have to cross to get to the parking area and I don't think trailers are allowed (or capable) of crossing, and also getting back across.

I agree that the one lane bridge might be a problem BUT it may be doable. I am fairly certain I've seen school busses run it. Do you have the weight and width specs to call the Gallup office to check?

And actually the northeast parking lot off of Geddes does have accommodations for trailers on right by it's east entrance as there is a boat launch near there.

Google street view of the spots, https://www.google.com/maps/@42.2770374,-83.6955255,3a,75y,202.94h,71.4t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sESxgm-Df8Knu20aK8_sluQ!2e0!7i13312!8i6656

The trail to the shelter from there is a bit longer of a walk and some of it is wood chips vs concrete but if you have wheeled gear haulers it is doable.

Let me know if you need more info. I have time and can scout the locations and get you pictures, video etc.

Here is the Google street view of that bridge. Note the sign on the right does not indicate any size/weight restrictions.

The canoe livery closes at 7PM, the park itself closes at midnight, per city ordinance, CH 39, Section 3.3.

3:3. - Park closings.
All parks are closed between the hours of 12:00 midnight and 6:00 a.m. The City Council may, by resolution, close parks or establish different closing hours than herein specified, provided that adequate notice of such closing is posted. Specific portions of parks may also be closed at dates and times as ordered by the Community Services Area Administrator, Public Services Area Administrator, or designee. No person shall keep any tent, boat, trailer, camper trailer or houseboat in any park during times that it is closed. No person shall enter or remain on the premises of any pool, skating rink or park building when it is closed, except with specific authorization of the Community Services Area Administrator or designee. When a park is closed, no person shall remain in or enter it other than to quietly sit or walk. A person or group of persons making noise audible from a distance greater than 50 feet shall not remain in a closed park.

And even if closed, as long as we are sitting quietly and not making noise audible from a distance of 50+ feet away, we're still fine.

I work right near there, and have been dining there for years. I would be shocked if they have six regulars on staff. Small place were they try to call everyone by name. Parking in this area can be a hassle; especially if the Michigan Theater is having an event.

Two newsies showed from the Ann Arbor News. Pretty terse and didn't stay long.

The two officers came just as we headed out. I saw they put on their fancy hardware and dressier uniforms. Most officers in A2 tend to wear their BDUs.

At least 3 Ann Arbor families were there. Us, the Wades, and Mr. Wong of the MGO case, by my count. There may have been others I did not recognize.
