Ok, I'm about to stain ak wood for the first time. I have instructions from Ironwood: http://www.ironwooddesigns.com/1howto.html

Is the oil, wax, stains, high grade oils all the same thing? I'm a little confused as what to buy.

This seems like a very complicated way to do it. I used to refinish my personal wood antique furniture with Watco oil. It's labor intensive, but looks beautiful. You have to keep it up, and that's where the wax comes in in this recipe, although the purists wouldn't use wax, they would just continue with the Watco.

Here you start with a rougher sandpaper, gradually working down to fine, and then to various grades of steel wool. After doing this for 30 years, I quit. I found a better/easier way!

Sand it smooth, use 150, then maybe 300, then wipe it down and stain it the color you want. Spray outdoor polyurethane for 3 or 4 coats, either gloss or satin, and you're good to go.

Are you refinishing an old stock or a brand new unfinished one?

If it is raw wood, use a quality stain, get it to the desired color and then as Who Dat reccommended use a quality polyurethane spray. I personally like to use spar urethanes that are made for outdoor applications.

In between coats use progressing grades of sand paper. 150,200 and then finish with a light sanding of 300 or higher.

If your are stripping old wood then find a good non toxic stipper and take off the old finsih before sanding.
