I'm looking for a suggestion on a do it all scope/optic for my 18" AR chambered in 223. I will mostly shoot less then 50 yards indoors but may find some places outside to shoot further. I broke the bank on the rifle so would like to keep optic in 200-400 price range. Please offer you suggestions

For 50 yds, indoors or out, I'd stay with iron, JMO

This is exactly what I am doing but target acquisition is slow with irons ( for me at least).

What if you can't see iron sights? I can shoot fine with glass, no way could I shoot with iron.

I have two "AR" types, with 3 uppers. On the first, with a 16" barrel, I have an ACOG, 4X32. Expensive, if bought new, but they are good sights. On the other I have a Burris 3-9x40mm. It's not bad, not as good as my higher end scopes, but, I don't have the money for the high end stuff any more. You can look at Vortex and the Bushnell "Elite" series as well. Both of those uppers have "Wylde" chambers, .223/5.56. The upper with the Burris is a RRA, with an 18" target barrel.

I am looking to scope a ..450 Bushmaster. I believe I am going to go with the Bushnell Elite 3500, 3-9x40mm, IF, I can find one. I am beginning to believe they may have been discontinued.

Shooting at "less then 50 yds indoors" I don't believe he needs any more then irons. I wear progressive bi-focals and see with aperture signs just fine all the way to 100 on most targets. I doubt he is shooting aspirins at 50 yds, likely a 1 or 2 inch bull. If he can see the target he should be able to hit it. Check out a high power match some day and see what a shooter can do with a bit of practice and irons.
I use a lot of scopes, actually almost all my rifles have them. I shoot for the most part however at 100 yds minimum, and at a bull usually under 0.5" out to that distance. ( I like ARA targets out to 100 )

My dads old M94 however has a aperture sight on it, and from the bench I can see and shoot it well enough to keep 5rds in the bottom of a beer can at 100. My problem there is not the sights, but that I can't see the can any more ;)

If you are looking for faster target acquisition a reflex or red dot might help. Any magnification will normally slow a shooter down when trying to get on target due to the narrow field of view. More X's on the scope, the smaller the window you are looking through, get closer to the target (50 vs 100 yds and it gets smaller yet.
I doubt at close range any glass will speed you up much, if at all. I would look at a reflex or dot sight with no magnification to start out.

Here ya go. It will serve you well in CQB type shooting, and will allow you to take your rifle out to 600y if you wanted to. Don't expect super good groups at range unless you are really used to shooting rifles.

Good option there...

Also look at the Vortex red-dots. Well priced and from what I know, pretty reliable. Backed with a no questions asked warranty.

Might look at the Sig electroptics red-dots as well.

While out of the price range you are looking to spend, they are getting rave reviews everywhere I have read.

Now that I found this, if I was in the market I would be snagging one probably.

I like the looks of that Burris. If I did not have that ACOG on my "plinker", AKA, my "SHTF" rifle I would be looking at that one. Same for that Primary Arms.

I would prefer, if it were possible, to buy a new set of 18 year old eyes, eyes that were as good as mine were back then. THAT is the ticket!

I have the Strike Eagle and for the money, you can't beat it. I'm really happy with the quality and clarity and don't need (nor can I spend the money for) the Razor.

1-4x and 1-6x are great set-ups...

But if you're only shooting 50yd and in, they lose a lot of their appeal.

Just a follow up to this thread. I came across a can't miss deal on the 1-6 strike eagle for $262 on optics planet. Haven't received it yet but it fits the bill for what I "think" I need. Thank you all for the awesome input.

You do not need magnified optics for your type of shooting.

Have you used an Aimpoint. They are amazing. You can pick up a used Aimpoint CompM2 for well under $400. You can find an M3 or M4 for the same price with a little patience. Heck, I have seen a couple Aimpoint T1's lately for under $450 used.

I had a aimpoint pro but traded it becuz I have a eye stigma that makes the dot look more like a "splat". For some reason it just really bothered me. I traded that to a fellow Mgo'er for a viper pst 1-4 but hen sold the pst. This all occurred before I got my SPR.

I second that - fits the bill and very good optics for the price.
