View Full Version : 22 rifle needs scope

So I'm looking at getting a scope for a 22 rifle. Probably 50 yards is as much as I'd ever plink with it, or take pest animals from the yard.
Is a Vortex StrikeFire 3-9 too much scope for it? I don't want to overspend, but I'd also rather not buy crap.

I'm also thinking to get the strikefire, put it on a .223 i have but rarely shoot, and move that rifle's scope (I think it was a cheap gander mountain branded 3-9) to the 22 for plinking.

thoughts?

No such thing. There is a Crossfire II 3-9 x 40, with a 100 yard parallax. I have one and it will not work well on a 22lr. YMMV

you're right, it was a crossfire (http://www.gandermountain.com/modperl/product/details.cgi?pdesc=Vortex-Crossfire-II-Riflescope-3-9x40-Dead-Hold-BDC-Reticle&i=612172). my bad
why isn't it good for 22? what would be better, but still moderately priced? I was looking at the vortex because gander mountain has $20 off $100, plus a $10 rebate on that scope right now.
I'm a scope noob. I guess logic tells me that I'd want something with parallax at the 50yd range i intend to shoot, so that's a thing to look for (i think).

You really want a scope with parallax set @50 yds or adjustable.

Nikon , Weaver, Leopold etc. all make fine rimfire scopes designed to use just as you describe. A 3x9 from one of these companies should do just fine at 50 or even 75yds for hunting and plinking.

The trouble with centerfire scopes is finding one that is not focused for parallax at 100 yds. Higher magnification scopes with a adjustable objective are often limited to 50 yds or more at the bottom end, some like the Vortex 6x18 AO Crossfire will go down to 10 or 15 yds, the Vipers IIRC stop at 50 yds. The "V" series Weavers also adjust down to rimfire ranges ~50 ft, on the V24 and are a lot of scope for the money IMHO. Air rifle optics are another fine choice.
My own rimfires wear a 2x7 Weaver, two have 3x9 Weaver riflefires, 2 have Weaver V24's, one a Vortex Crossfire 6x18x40.

The Nikon rimfire is excellent for 22

I had a mueller 4.5-14 I believe. Over kill for a 22 but the adjustable objective was great for proper focus from 25-300 plus. I got tipped to it from the rim fire forums. Nice scope within your price range. Michigan based company but made in China. It was fun watching my old 10-22 punching basically the same hole over and over again at 50 yards.

I'd put the cheap scope on the 22, but if you don't shoot the 223, why bother scoping it w/a high end piece.. Me I put this Tasco 4x16 (http://www.amazon.com/Tasco-World-Class-DWC416X46N-Vitalzone/dp/B00200C5KQ/ref=sr_1_4?s=hunting-fishing&ie=UTF8&qid=1462591385&sr=1-4&keywords=tasco) on my .22 JW15 and shoot out to 125m w/no problem. Good field of view, clear, low cost. I've shot silhouette comp w/it ... misses were always me not the scope! Guy's with the CZ's & Anshutz w/the 500$ scopes didn't shoot any better. Don't see how you can go wrong except if you are only going to 50yds and less, might just get a low end 4x only, don't really need variable magnification. I know a lot of chipmunks, rabbits and fox squirrels were ended in my teens w/a Glenfield bolt action and 4x scope, a weaver I think. Never felt the need for more.

I have a couple of Cabbalas rimfire scopes ... 3 x 9 x 40. I've been very happy with them ... about $100 and lifetime warranty.

I am running a 4-14 Mildot Nikon on my Savage 22 and regularly shoot 100-200y.

I don't recall the exact model, but it's a Vortex, maybe 4-12x, and it definitely has a parallax knob on the left that goes down to 30 or 40 yards.

It has been a fantastic combination with my takedown ruger .22. Yes, the scope cost more than the gun, but not too much more. And amazing groups.

My favorite scope for 22s is the Vortex Diamondback 2-7 Rim. I own several and they are most excellent.

I hate english house sparrows. They are an introduced species and they are (literally) murder on the native songbird species. You can shoot them all year long because they are so bad and destructive.

The females look a lot like other little fuzzy brown and grey birds, and 7x isn't enough power to tell, with certainty, if I need to shoot the bird, or not at 40 or 50 yards.

Now, if you're a rabbit guy, well, a rabbit is a rabbit is a rabbit.

Well the squirrels have dug up my squash seeds, a purchased tomato sprout, and a couple feet of radish and lettuce seeds. So, it's time. The savage mk ii should be showing up in a bit, and a scope zeroed for suburban back yard should take care of the problem without alerting anybody. Not that my neighbors care, one side would say "good. less animals getting into our house" and the other side would say "good, less for our dogs to drag in". I'm not sure about the neighbors behind... but one of the houses is abandoned and as long as I set up a decent backstop or keep my shots aimed towards the big tree between us (as I have been so far) I'm not seeing any danger.

And may I suggest a suppressor?

It's risky of course. Once you try one, it's hard to go back...

Yeah, I forgot about the squirrel problem, and the freaking 7 stripe ground squirrels. When we moved into the house, there were slightly less than a million of them.

They make excellent reactive targets...

Not the most addictive thing in the world. I only have 4 .
And I'm very sad my deal on number 5 fell through.
My 22 is currently on an AR with a cmmg 22 conversion kit and it's not great. It works, just not well

I have a Vortex Crossfire II 2-7 x32 on my .22 and works great for me and my 10 year old. Not too expensive either. About $110 when I got it several years ago.

I would think a 3x9 would be enough

So I was impatient and just ordered one of these
Bushnell AR22 2-7x32 BDC reticle with target turrets (http://www.amazon.com/Bushnell-Zone-22-Rimfire-Reticle-Riflescope/dp/B00ABP4KNM?ie=UTF8&*Version*=1&*entries*=0)
At a family cookout I was able to tag 1" and 2" spinners one after another every second or two from a little further away.
With subsonic rounds, everybody was impressed how working the bolt was the loudest part, and everybody was able to hit the spinners once I got it rough sighted in.
Sooner or later I might take it to a longer range and put it on a bench. it seems like the scope will give me a little room to grow.

Finally got to shoot my t-bolt with this scope. It is amazing. Clear as can be. Hits on squirrels at 50-75yds are a snap. Because it is so clear your not fiddling with parallax, when you do it really gets good.
