Hey everyone. I have a Ruger Super Red Hawk that I purchased used but it came with a terrible scope that doesn't seem to hold zero. It's probably some cheap thing the seller threw on just to sell the gun faster. Any suggestions? I would have liked to try a red dot scope but I dont have a rail mounted on my pistol and I really dont think I ever want one. I'd like to keep the gun original. I'm guessing that limits me to scopes. Please nothing higher than a 2x-4x and I really cant spend much more than about $300- $350. I guess exceptions can always be made though right? That's why they sell Ramen noodles when budgets get tight!

They make rail mounts that integrate to the gun, so they are removable, and don't require drilling/tapping. Then you can try different red-dots and scopes to see which one you like better.

I have to look around but I may still have my rail from my SRH I sold a few years ago. It mounts right to the machined ring mount surface of the Ruger, I will let you know if I find it, you can have it for super cheap if I find it.

I listened to my smith and put one of these http://www.opticsplanet.com/leupold-fx-ii-2x20mm-handgun-scope-w-matte-finish-duplex-reticle-67820.html on a Super Blackhawk in the mid '70s that is still going strong. He also insisted I use Buehler rings and bases on mine but don't know if they are still available.
What ever you go with I would look for a lifetime warranty if possible as odds are at some point you will need to have it worked on. I've been lucky so far IMO. I have seen reticules break, scopes fail to adjust properly and, one even sheared the mount screws and flew off a Black Hawk one guy had on the range.

Aimpoint makes red-dots that will fit in your Ruger rings, without the need for a Picatinny rail.

Thanks for the heads up. Someone was generous enough to sell me one of the plates for less.than $10 on here. I'm going to get a red dot instead of a scope now that it's an option.

That's my baby. I wish I had looked into that Bushnell scope before buying the package used.

Thanks!
This was my 2nd handgun purchase, I had high hopes of long range deer hunting in the cedars I frequented up north. :badass: The scope and mounts cost me more then the gun.
Never had a shot over 15-20 yds when I had it with me, but I found it was not hard to make killing shots on clay birds at 75-100 yds with it if I had a stump or fence rail to shoot off of. The gun liked 225gr Speer 1/2 jacket HP's over H110 but the last 15 yrs or so it has been a steady diet of 240gr HydraShoks with 2400 when I get around to shooting it. Today I tend to lean more to 45acp if I shoot a handgun or a 22lr if possible. Wish they came with factory mounts back then..

Sounds like you have a good plan. I have messed with the 44 for years with and without optics. I never really warmed up to scopes. For years now I have used a halo sight, and that had worked very well.

I've seen some cool red dots on truglo.com. One has a lit reticle and a built in targeting laser. Not sure if it is legal to hunt with a laser in michigan though.

I found an old M8 series Leupold 2x and put that on my RedHawk. Fixed power is tough as nails and didn't break the bank.
