Just wondered if any of you full length bed your lightweight hunting rifles? I just finished bedding my newest light rifle tonight and I think it'll do the job.

The rifle was a Rem 700 Mountain Guide Rifle in 243. It's basically just a stainless Mountain Rifle barreled action dropped in one of the Remington Titanium stocks. They're a pretty handy rifle and they top the scales at 5 lbs 13 oz bare. This one weighs 6 3/4 pounds all up.

This was the old bedding in the Tang, which was fine and I didn't touch it.

This was the front after I ground and chiseled out most of the old bedding and drilled some holes to give the bedding something to lock on to.

Taped it all up and used plenty of release agent.

Mixed up a bunch of Marine-Tex.

Put waaaayyy more than I needed in there.

Now its setting up and I should be able to pop it out and trim it in another hour or two.

I popped it out and trimmed it up. Now it's back together and I'll let it set up until tomorrow then I'll step outside and shoot it to see how it does. There are a few little air pockets but it's good enough for me.

That looks great. I take it that this isnt your first time bedding a gun? Why did you do it full length? I thought free floating the barrel was better? I am new to bolt guns and just dont know. What scope do you have on it in the top pic?

I thought full length meant the full length of the action not the action and barrel?

How does the marine tex work for you? I have always used devcon, but my father prefers the brownells stuff

edited original post because it sounded very rude to me somehow. My apologies.

I have bedded a few rifles before. That scope is just a Leupold VariX-III 3.5-10x40's in a set of Talley Light Weight 1 pc ring/base.

On all my heavy rifles I bed the action from the rear tang to recoil lug and also pour a pad for the first 1.5" of barrel.

I'm no expert by any means but "they" say a lightweight barrel can benefit from full length bedding. I bedded this rifle when I got it a month ago the way I normally do but still wasn't happy with the results. It would turn in some good groups but not as consistently as I would have liked. I'm going to see if the FL bedding job can get that little whippy barrel to settle down a bit. If it makes no difference it's not a big deal at all to just relieve some of the bedding to float the barrel again.

As far as the marine-tex, I've done probably a dozen rifles with it over the last few years and have zero complaints. I've heard very good things about DevCon and Steel-bed but I've only ever used Marine-Tex (the grey, not the white). Bedding a rifle is not that hard and that's a good way to save a few hundred dollars on a rifle build. Anymore I just have my custom rifles barreled by the smith and I bed it myself when I get the barreled action back.

hmmm, you learn something new every day!

I found devcon and never looked back. If I have trouble finding it I may have to try marine tex. i was looking for marine tex the other day but had no idea where to get it. i was not going o use it for bedding, but I needed some nonetheless. I am guessing a boat supply store?

If my LTR starts to act up I may have to try and to a FL job on it.
