My son is looking for a budget scope for is AR.

He is looking at the 3-12x40 here: http://www.cabelas.com/product/Bushnell-reg-AR-Optics-Riflescopes/1580060.uts?searchPath=%2Fbrowse.cmd%3FcategoryId% 3D734095080%26CQ_search%3Dbushnell%2Bar%2B223%26CQ _st%3Db

Which comes with a mount that he doesn't really need.

Or for $10 more, the 4-12x40 AO here: http://www.cabelas.com/product/Vortex-Crossfire-II-Riflescopes/1441169.uts?searchPath=%2Fbrowse.cmd%3FcategoryId% 3D734095080%26CQ_search%3Dvortex%26CQ_st%3Db

I'm thinking the Vortex would be the better of the two. Would you agree?

If he's going to use the AO, the layout on the Bushnell is more convenient imo. The turrets on the Bushnell can be a bit stiff and not the greatest feedback though. However I do like that they are exposed. You could I guess leave the caps off the Vortex to achieve the same exposed turrets though. Eye relief is a bit longer on the Vortex and for me I'd rather have the 3.7 on the Bushnell. My Nikon is 4" and I had to move it far forward with a cantilever mount to get the proper eye relief. They will both do the job just fine, the main difference being where the AO is located and which he prefers.

Would you estimate that the quality of both is comparable?

Ive had one of the bushnells and liked it alot. It was the 3-9. Glass was clear, never had any issues. I sold the rifle it was on. I would have gotten another but found a 1-4 scope worked better for me on an AR and wanted to try the nikon. I havent used a crossfire but Id be willing to bet the quality in that price range is very similar.

if he's comparing the 2 scopes, the vortex (that is only $10 more than the bushnell 3-12X advertised) has a 50mm objective lens(!) not 40mm

I can vouch for Vortex lifetime warranty and customer service being second to none.

Don't know what your price is you're looking to spend, but for $120 that bushnell is a steal. I paid full price when it came out and I love mine.

Get a Nikon buckmaster for $100 and be done with it.
