It has to be a combination of things, if i operate the rifle by hand, it chambers everytime. So im pretty sure its not the magazine (i tried 3 diffrent ones). When it cycles it will close on an empty chamber 8 out of 10 times.

Looking at the ejected brass is see 2 things that disturb me. First is the extractor nearly broke the lip off the brass casings. Wich makes them unreloadable.

2ndly there are tiny brass shavings floating all around the chamber about 4 or 6 shots in.

I think something is wrong with the finish in the chamber. Perhaps they got a burr on the tool used to grind the chamber to finish.

Im pretty sure its not the gas system, and if it was, being as this is a super match rifle the gas system is welded shut or something along those lines.

Update: I just went outside and cycled some live rounds that I inspected before putting through the rifle. Every one of them has a dent right at the neck of the round.

Last time we sent it to springfield armory with a sample of our own rounds, the brass we got back from them even had the marks on them!!!

The empty brass in the backround is the brass we got back from springfield after they insisted their wasn't a problem with our ammunition or the rifle.

for the low low price of 1 million dollars plus a working supermatch rifle.

Anyone know of a gunsmith who will approach an m1a super match?

I have many many thousands of rounds through the loaded M1A I purchased 10 years ago. The symptoms you describe (brass shavings, beat-up brass, dented shoulders) sound consistent with my rifle. It runs.

Does your rifle not run?

Definitly doesnt run, rifle has probably under 200 rounds through it since new probably less. Bolt closes on empty chamber usually every other round or less

Howdy,

Looks like a possible feed ramp problem. Keep us posted and share your knowledge.

Respectfully,

I do agree, this sounds like short stroking with an added feed ramp problem.

I also have a M1A that I've have for about 7 years now and all my brass comes out like that as well. I even was shooting some factory Remington 308 and was blowing primers out one time. But my M1A has never stoped working. could be you have a tighter chamber on the Super Match than my Scout.
