I just have a cheap set with expanding and contracting inserts. I've used "expensive" ones owned by others. What I found over time…it's more about a steady hand and patience vs a magic tool.

I like these craftsman. Do both internal and external.

I find the Harbor freight ones are fine because you can take em to the grinder to make them fit what you want, and you arent worried about ruining an expensive set.

Way back when.... I was just a young lad, and MOTECH was a brand new school, different kinds of clips and rings had different names.

These are split rings. Their general use was for key rings and light seal retention. Usually no tools were needed for them.

http://www.prostrap.com/SplitRings/SplitRings.jpeg

Then there were snap rings. They came in both internal and external varieties. And except for some very light application, you needed a pair of pliers that pushed in the right direction with tips that fit the size of the small hole in them in order to install or remove them.

http://www.brownells.com/userdocs/skus/p_231000118_1.jpg

Then there was a "circlip" retaining or lock ring. They came in internal as well as external varieties. The internal type had "ears" that you used just regular pliers on, but the external type needed a special pliers for expanding the ring. Usually snap ring pliers were not strong enough for these. There are also various other devices that are known as "lock rings"

And none of these should be confused with the E-clip. Generally the E-clip was too strong to push on or pull off with you fingers. Needle nose pliers are the preferred tool. E-clips also come in such small sizes that, along with a myriad of other clips, were generally referred to as "jesus clips", as in "Jesus, where did that thing fly to"

Now, if you are not working with large snap rings in transmissions or other drive-line components, then the all purpose snap ring pliers set (with interchangeable tips) will work for most things. Stop at the auto store and see what they have. Prices can range from $5 to $150 for a set. Get what you like, but remember, you get what you pay for.

If you actually want good ones, buy Knipex. Not cheap, but there are none that are better. If you buy Harbor Freight, you get what deserve.

[QUOTE=Roundballer;2881559]Way back when.... I was just a young lad, and MOTECH was a brand new school, different kinds of clips and rings had different names.

I've lived in Detroit my whole life. Why would I call split rings , snap rings?

I want them for removing treble hooks from fishing lures, not automotive drive trains.

I've got big hands and a big wallet --I'm gonna buy that $400 set of Kipex for my $4.95 Plano tackle box.

thanks, y'all and pee on anything from HF

But on a more serious note, my sister has almost no manual dexterity and likes to make necklaces. She prefers the Beadalon® brand, I think she got them at Michael's. You will have to see if they are fine enough tipped for your purpose.

I can usually do it with just a finger nail or the point of a pocket knife.

Ahhh, I see! Hence my question.

Dint even know there was such a tool! Finger nail for me, but
I can see how some would need pliers.

Some of the beading/wire craft tools are very nice.

I worship at at the alter of Knipex.

I just use these http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Berkley_Chrome_Split_Ring_Pliers_6/descpage-CHS.html?gclid=CjwKEAiA8dDEBRDf19yI97eO0UsSJAAY_yC S4yuILxN8G5B0n2HbVfQdBuqxy18sNXw2YWQuttmwIhoCw0zw_ wcB but the people that do a lot of baits ( i pro staff for a custom painter that dehooks and rehook thousands of lures) use a razor knife that they grind the sharp part off of. they just slip it in between the gap

I purchased a set with inserts from Snap-On 25 years ago and I've used them maybe 20 times in that many years.

Like PT stated, a stead hand and good light is the key!

Split Ring as in fishing, not Snap Ring
Cabelas carries these, beats the hell out of those crappy stamped, chrome plated things I used for years.

I got these:

which is a bit nicer than the cheapies I used to have, but they still perform the same thing.
