Looking to identify a magnification range for my first bolt action rifle, a new Remington 700 SPS chambered in .308 Win.
Intended use: Target Shooting and hunting (all around 100 yards)
After looking around online I am considering a 4-16 magnification to allow for trips to 200+ yard ranges

What are you going to shoot at 200+ yds?
For deer sized targets + a lowly 4X-6X will do out to 250 or so with out really stretching it. A 3x9 will serve you well for 90% of the hunting most do, and is plenty for most close range target work, plus small game such as woodchuck and crows (150-200 yds). If you plan on fine precise work and smaller targets more power is needed of course. 100 yd egg shoots or clay birds at 200 makes that 4-16 a better choice as example and, if you take most hunting out of the picture and plan on sticking with just gongs and paper punching, or very small animals at long range the more power the better IMO. My varmint rifles all have scopes that top out at 18-24X and more X's would be desirable some times.

No need to mount a spotting scope on your rifle.

I had to have the highest magnification scope on my rifles (4.5-14, 6.5-20) but now, a 2-7 or 2.5-8 is perfect. My deer hunting rifles do not have anything larger then 10x.

I have two rifles wearing scopes with magnification greater than 9x, both are target rifles meant for precision work.
Anything centerfire geared towards hunting, target work, or plinking typically wear a 2x-9x at the most. I have a couple rifles wearing a 2x just because I can't see the iron sights any more, and a 2x will run me out to 200 yards in most circumstances. Inside 100 yards a tiny aperture sight will do the job nicely.

I agree.

I have a 24x's for my precision rifles, Im limited to 600 yards +/-. I spend 99% of the time below 12x at 600, usually 10x. I don't have any issue with target acquisition or seeing the target enough to hit MOA sized targets at 600. Well, at least when I miss it isn't the optic or rifles fault, its definitely on me as a shooter, lol.

For hunting, I prefer lower magnification like a 3-9x, with it set at 3x the majority of the time. I would much rather have larger FOV and low light performance in a hunting application.

For a 100yard hunting or paper puncher, 3-12 is the most I would go. 4-16 isn't necessarily undesirable, but you do give up FOV going with a higher range.

Thanks for all the info. Going to get my hands on/check out some sub x10 riflescopes this weekend. Any specific features that I should be looking for?

After shopping around, I believe I will be going with the Trijicon Accupower 2.5-10x56 scope mounted with the nightforce aluminum direct mount.
Currently trying to calculate which height direct mount I will need to clear the 56mm objective.

Cha-CHING......
That's a big objective lens... Gonna need some pretty tall rings for that one.
Here's a handy calculator which allows you to plug in different variablesizes

I like 2.5-10x44 and 4-16x50 Vortex PSTs on my 308 guns. I'm good to 800 but not usually shooting precision groups, just hitting steel plates. I find that the 2.5 power gives a wide enough field of view for the shorter distances and the 10x is good for the longer ranges. But the 16x sure is nice at distance and I've shot MOA groups at 500 with it. The lower power range scope is better to carry.
