Yes you! I know you are out there. You addicts know who you are. I know there are enthusiasts and others with interest out there too. There are probably others out there who don't know anything about Milsurp collecting that could be dragged in to this addiction.

I think it's high time that we let the administrators know that we would like to see a Military Surplus thread/category. There has to be a good number of people on this site that feel the same way. I know that there are lots of collectors and enthusiasts in Michigan - I see them all the time in the other forums that I frequent and I personally know a few of them. Our own thread could provide the following benefits:

1. Bring together a group of people that have the same interests
2. Get questions answered about your rifles or purchase desires
3. Relationship building
4. Information about local or in-state gun shows - the good, the bad and the ugly
5. Show off your stash
6. Knowledge building
7. Shooting ranges
8. Other...

MGO is a good site for general enthusiasts. But, based on a few recent posts, I think there are a lot of people, like us, who would like their own category.

I've been told that we just have to create a thread like this and get a lot of guys interested who feel the same way to respond to this thread. The Administrators won't create a thread for us unless they see interest. So, if you would like a category just for us, please respond to this and tell your friends to, as well.

Let's get a Military Surplus category going!

Yes, all good resources. There are several others out there that are very good too. Many of these sites have great information and history of the Milsurp weapons. And, there is no use in trying to recreate the wheel. And, these sites have membership that spans the world. For us, such a category would drill down to people who actually live relatively close to each other - at least in the state of Michigan. And, as long as we have a Michigan forum in place, why not take advantage of it?

Let's remember also that we have quite a few Milsurp collectors/sellers in this state. I know of at least three off the top of my head. There are quite a few more who frequent the gun shows as buyers and sellers. And there are a number of very knowledgeable collectors living in the state as well.

Let's keep the interest going!

Discounts at Midway, Brownells alone will pay for the cost of the license.

Getting cool historical guns delivered to your doorstep with no FFL background check is super convenient.

The guys that have them know the perks better. There is a cool C&R forum on AR15.com

The C&R license allows you to purchase C&R weapons from out of state without going through a transfer agent such as an 01FFL Dealer. The benefit is that you don't have to pay a dealer a transfer fee and go through the background checks. Your applications is basically a 4473 that is good for the whole time you have your license. You can purchase a C&R rifle or pistol from any dealer with no 4473 papers to fill out. Some business will give you a discount simply because they don't have to phone the purchase in. The C&R item can be delivered to your door step. Before I got my license, Jay's Sporting Goods was charging $40-$50 for a firearm transfer. I eventually found an 01FFL in Boyne City who would do FFL transfers for me for $20. So, a C&R will pay for itself the first time you use it.

C&R weapons are generally weapons that are 50 years old and older. Items manufactured during or before 1898 are considered antiques (in essence non firearms) by the BATF and most states. Where legal, there is no license required to purchase or sell these. Many C&R weapons have been put on the list the BATF send when you receive the license. But, it's my understanding that they don't maintain that list. So, the 50 year old rule applies. A class III item may be 50 years old but you would need the appropriate paperwork for those. I am basically referring to rifles and handguns.

You must log in and log out all purchases or sales of C&R's in a bound book. If you owned C&R rifles or pistols prior to being issued a license, you do not have to "book" them. But if you sell one of those, you will have to book it in and then book it out as a CR& owned prior to your license. It is important for any C&R licensee to understand that this license is not a license to deal, i.e., to buy and sell C&R's as a business. This is strictly limited to those with dealer licenses. This does not mean that you cannot sell. The law recognizes that collectors will sell in order to upgrade their collections. Even though you can purchase long guns at gun shows without back ground checks or purchase long guns FTF within Michigan (our gun show loophole), if what you purchase falls within the C&R category, it must be booked in. When your license expires you can renew or not renew. If you do not renew, the you are under no further obligation to book any purchases or sales and your bound book may be destroyed.

Hope that helps. Any FFL is a big deal and anyone wishing to have one should think twice and fully understand the law, especially the record keeping required when they buy and sell.

This is another reason we need our own category. I'm sure more detailed questions will come on this topic. It is exactly for people like us that the C&R was designed for in the first place.

And then I can explain the phenomenon that is the CMP and how once you have your milsurp in hand that there are matches all over the state where you can put them to use and become proficient in such. A glorious endeavor.

Yes. I bought my first M-1 Garand last year from CMP but have yet to shoot it. My club, Northland Sportsman's Club in Gaylord, has vintage matches on Sundays during the summer. I've often thought about going out there with one of my Finn M-39's or one of my Swedes to give the Garand guys a run for their money. :) Sadly, the eyes aren't what they used to be, but it could be a lot of fun. And, I've found that the guns I take out there always seem to draw a crowd.

You would be surprised at the number of places you can find them. Gun stores that carry military surplus rifles and pawn shops are good places to start. And you are not limited to our state. When you travel, keep a copy of your license with you. Hit the gun stores and pawn shops. Forums like this with Want to Buy or Want to sell threads are very good also. Online auction houses like GunBroker is an option. There are a number of online businesses in Michigan and all over the country that have surplus rifles and pistols as well.

The good thing about having our own thread is that if you find a rifle you are interested in, you can PM one of the more knowledgeable members and share the information and pricing with them to get their advice. You should never publicly post the link to a current offering or auction before it is over. Another member may be watching the item and wish to bid on it. When people "spill the beans" about an offering, more people will rush to the offering. We hate bidding competition for items we really like.

I think a milsurp section on MGO is a good idea. I could careless about AR's,AK's and Glock's.. that's all I see anymore, I hardly visit this forum anymore because of it. Just to add my 2cents on the C&R just make sure you keep records handy and you don't mind the ATF having a look at your book and collection. The C&R was nice to have when milsurp' were coming in left and right but now the prices are getting a little crazy online. It may still be worth it for some people but not for everyone. Do your own research and see if you should get or not.

Now we have a place we can go. So, if you have something Milsurp on your minds, questions, concerns (let's keep politics out of it), new stuff, where's the newest gun show, guns you want to post or just about anything Milsurp, this is the place in Michigan for you. This will be a great place for newer enthusiasts to come and seek advice so they too can become addicted... After all, that is our pledge to newer collectors.

Thanks to Mikeb32 for his assistance and support.

I think everyone should have a C&R FFL.

I believe that no one should need a C&R or FFL to execise the 2nd Amendment.

I would support a milspec area on MGO.

qz2026

Unfortunately, this is the world we live in right now. I agree, there should be no red tape and no background checks in order for us to exercise our 2nd Amendment rights for any pistol or rifle. That said, I think there should be a little control as to who can purchase and who can't purchase. I would say that mentally ill people or felons should not be allowed to purchase. The problem is, though, that when restrictions occur, it always seems to be politicized - lists developed based on political considerations vs actual "makes sense" lists. I don't know what the answers are. One thing for sure is that a C&R opens up the collecting of certain firearms for those interested.

No intention to hijack the thread but this is the thinking that brought us to where we are today, only the law-makers then included people of color.

Maybe we can exclude mentally ill and felons from the milspec area or allow only C&R/FFL holders?
