Ham radio can be a lot of fun. I enjoy it in the winter mostly and experimenting with homemade antennas. Like guns and shooting there are many different areas to explore.

These aren't the people that are on the 1000 watt CB sounding like somebody out of a smokey and the bandit movie, talking to people 10 states away are they?

No, Amateur radio operators, (Most at least) are not like that in any way, shape or form, we are there to provide emergency communications in a respectful, intelligent way. In addition to having fun while doing it! There are very stringent rules placed on Amateur Radio Operators in regards to our politeness and demeanor on the radio, feel free to pm me for more info on the hobby, I am an instructor in the St. Clair County Area

I wouldn't call them stringent, infact with alot of the trash talk I hear on 80 meters its obvious that very little if any rules are inforced at all. Its not near as bad as CB, but its definetly not what it use to be. Its still a fun hobby, especially for the winter months.

Thanks guys.
I as a truck driver use the CB to communicate with other drivers (I personally avoid channel 19), and it is extremely annoying when the people with the 1000 watt radios are talking skip.
I was just going to ask what the point of those guys are, but you aren't them.

I've carried a vhf ham radio with me while hunting for 20 years. I can get help or help someone where the cell phone is dead.

I might consider a one day class in the future if it was a bit closer to home.

Like guns, ham radios are a tool of freedom. I love the Internet, but it can be taken away from us suddenly and without warning. Ham operators can be mobile, and self-reliant.

I'm not an operator, but I should be.

NO, the code requirement has been gone from the Tech class for years and more recently from the General Class as well.
