Hi All,

I recently purchased a Remington 11-87. Unfortunately, I had to store it in my buddies apartment for a week. (his apartment is fairly humid) During which it developed two little spots of rust.

I stupidly kept the gun in the cheap paper thin cloth bag that it came in. I have a feeling the cheap bag wicked the oil off the gun in some areas.

What other things do you use to help prevent rust? I usually just put a liberal coating of gun oil on the gun, but now I am somewhat paranoid.

Thanks,

Eric

My favorite rust protectant is a product called Clenzoil. If I am not going to shoot that particular firearm for a while I will store it using full syntheic motor oil.

FP-10 is all ill use as I learned its one of if not the only oil that will not alter your metals propertys. Blows away CLP.

Im not so sure about the guys using motor oil. Ive heard they used Mobil One in Iraq though because the CLP was evaporating.

no.4shot,

I will have to keep that in mind for long term storage.

As for the 1187....I cleaned the rust off with some oil and fine steel wool. After applying Barricade, as recommended by ColonelKurtz, the rust has not returned. (thanks ColonelKurtz) I also replaced the cheap bag with a Browning VCI gun sock and a traditional gun case. No more rust...cross fingers.

Thanks,

Eric

I was going to tell you to get some Birchwood Casey Sheath but I see they've changed the name to Barricade. Another +1 for Barricade.

RIG grease. RIG= rust inhibiting grease. Fingerprints (salt) will rust quickly.
