Pleased to announce Shotgun Day for MGO members and their family/friends/youths/lady shooters or anyone interested.

http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f49/postban/animated%20gifs/revolve_shell1.gif

Event: MGO Shotgun Day at Island Lake (http://www.islandlakeshootingrange.com/default.htm) in Brighton MI
Date: April 26, 2009
Location: Island Lake Shooting Range (http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&t=h&ll=42.516153,-83.678677&spn=0.004761,0.009184&z=17) 13600 E. Grand River, Brighton, MI 48116 Phone: [248] 437-2784
Time: 10am - 2pm (approx, starting time is firm, end time is approx, range is open til 5pm)
Price: Island Lake Range Fees (http://www.islandlakeshootingrange.com/hoursrates.htm)
Sporting Clays $19 / 50 targets
Skeet $6 / 25 targets
Trap $6 / 25 targets
5-Stand $6 / 25 targets

Golf Cart for SC $15 (arrive early to be sure of reserving one)

This will be an opportunity where those of us who have shot all the shotgun games can get out with anyone interested to try Trap, Skeet, 5-stand and 50rds of Sporting Clays. I hear people interested but often they don't have the right shotgun (any 26" or longer). We need knowledgeable competition shotgunners to help out, shoot in a squad with new folks, give advice on technique. Possibly allow new shooters to try their competition or sporting type shotguns. :brow:

Also need at least 8 volunteers to man the MGO table to sell MGO goods and solicit new members signups. We will rotate table watchers so everyone gets a chance to shoot. NickS is coming out with all that cool MGO swag so come on out and get yours. Also sign up to be Contributing Member if you have not done so yet.

Shooters are responsible to provide their own ammo and pay shooting and parking fees ($6 State Permit daily) or coordinate rides with other members to save on parking.

Special AMMO note;
12 ga ammo must Target/Sporting #7-1/2, #8 or #9 with 3 DRAM MAX, NO EXCEPTIONS!!! No Magnums, No Field Loads over 3 drams. Same goes for all other gauges, ammo must be Target or Sporting type. Larger shot than 7-1/2, 8 or 9 is not allowed in any gauge.

If you want to shoot all four disciplines 200rds would be suggested min but that is a whole lot of shooting. I suggest the 100rd packs at Walmart or your favorite sporting goods place. Just make sure it says Target or Sporting on it.

A special invitation for you new or novice Shotgunners. You hear the terms like Skeet, Trap, 5-stand and are maybe not sure what they are. Sure you know they are flying clay targets fired at with shotguns but maybe not much beyond that. Below are some intro links for the games, please take a look and read a bit.

All clay games intro mms://media.nssa-nsca.com/NSSA-NSCA/IntroToClays/IntroClays-High.wmv

Intro to Sporting Clays http://www.islandlakeshootingrange.com/tour-sc.htm (bottom of the page, several)
Intro to Skeet: http://www.shotgunworld.com/bbs/viewtopic.php?t=49004
Intro to Trap: http://www.fieldandclays.com/about.htm#Trap%20fundamentals
Intro to 5-stand http://www.claytargetsonline.com/fivestand.php

Another bit of advice for new shotgunners, you need two things to deal with your ammo;
1) a pouch on your person to hold approx 25rds.
2) A Range bag or ammo container to hold the rest of your ammo as you move from game to game.

If you are shooting Sporting Clays a backpack or tote can serve this purpose. Your shotgun will be in one hand and 125rds of 12ga weighs about 10lbs. The SC course is a one mile walk from station to station on a gravel trail. Comfortable shoes!

Island Lake has golf carts available for a $15 extra rental fee but you must arrive early to get one in my experience, they are pretty popular.

I asked Pat Lieske for some special challenge (read: real hard to hit) setup on the Sporting Clays course and he said that the last station is just that, "tough for even experienced Clay shooters". The rest of the Sporting Clays is setup with two levels of difficulty, Blue and Red. Blue is Hunting style and Red is Competition style. We are free to shoot either but I suggest you all try Blue to start and maybe try a Red target presentation if you want. All broken targets feel great but cracking those tough ones is even more rewarding.

What say you members? Your knowledge, experience and time is needed.
Please post up any interest you may have, helping, shooting or coaching so that we can get the shoot organized;

Can we just come out and shoot? I'm certainly not new to the sport (not to say I couldn't be better) however I'm also not in a postion to actually help people out. I wouldn't mind shooting a little, though. Could probably man the table for a while as well.

Please get with the activitee's chair from MGO UTPD#5 here on the boards, He can help set this up as well as officially get the blessing of the whole EC to attach MGO with this event. The reason being there was a suggestion already floating around to have a shotgun event at Island Lake to benefit MGO and B4K sometime this summer.

I have spoken with Ed Hoffman (and a couple EC members) and we would like to thank postban for spearheading this "fun shoot" event at Island Lake.

I am more than happy to help, if needed, however it looks as though it is handled.

Feel free to announce this as an MGO Fun Shoot Event at Island Lake.

Thank you,

Pending a date and time, I might be able to help out some how. I have done clay shooting and some skeet, but I wouldn't say I know alot. I know the general operation of shotguns and how to aim and lead targets.

I would like to come out and shoot, maybe 5 stand and sporting clays. I am new to this and have only shot sporting clays once, no trap or skeet. A definate "be there" would depend on the date and time. I will keep my eyes open for further info.

Definitely interested in shooting and meeting people, depending on date and time. A little rusty with the scatter guns, but I like five stand and trap.

No registration on our end, just show up. I suggest about 15minutes before starting time. Just bring ammo, there will be more shotguns there than you can shake a stick at.

Spoke to one of the execs here at work and he is interested too, bring out a couple Krieghoffs, one skeet special and one Sporting, they cost about 8k each. Just bring ammo cuz you can shoot my guns too, Beretta 391 12 and 20. Did I say JUST BRING AMMO yet?

See the post above this one where it says JUST BRING AMMO, many, many, many extra shotguns will be there.

I'll come and use the rifle range that day.
:tsk: SHOTGUN DAY, not rifle day. Also you can learn from knowledgeable and friendly fellow MGO members who will teach you the sports. Once in a lifetime opportunity man.......... well till Shotgun Day 2 anyway.

I personally guarantee you use of a 12 or 20 ga shotgun that day. JUST BRING AMM8)

I am in. Anyone from the Dearborn Heights, downriver, Westland, Garden City area want to carpool? I will pitch in for gas and pay parking. I just can't put that many miles on my lease, lol. I've got 500 miles left on the lease that isn't up until October.

They sell ammo there. I don't recall pricing as I've never bought any from them. I usually go to wally world or Dunhams and pick up a case of shells before I go.

Assuming I'm not going to be in Brighton the whole weekend I don't mind carpooling.

Thanks for the offer, Dave. I appreciate it. The Benelli doesn't kick nearly as hard as the Mossberg, but she insists she wants to try both. However, I am not going to hand her the Mossberg until she is fully comfortable with the Benelli first.

We still have not fired the .22LR I bought for her. I need to get her out ASAP, as she has only fired my XD.

I was there most all day. Didn't get your response early enough to meet you..
As far as I know we have never ran out of ammo. (First time for everything)

And I copied this from our website for general information only;
General clay target range rules:

Please note the 26" rule. This is a DNR rule regarding sound issues. If you remember, we were in a 5 year court battle.

* Ear and eye protection are MANDATORY for all shooters and spectators.
* Gun action MUST be open at all times prior to your turn to shoot.
* Gun MUST NOT be loaded until you are in the shooting position.
* Gun MUST be pointed down range while loading.
* Gun MUST be empty with action open before leaving shooting station.
* ALWAYS point gun in a safe direction.
* No more than 2 shells are allowed to ever be loaded in the gun (with exception of the 3 bird shoot coming up on March, 28, 2009.)
* Shotgun ammunition MUST be 7-1/2 to 9 shot, 3-1/4 drams of powder or less.
* Shotguns must have 26" minimum barrel length (excluding youth model shotguns)
* Please notify shooting range staff of any non-working machines. DO NOT attempt to fix.

Postban, I hope your going to try the 3 bird shoot. You will never have more fun shooting sporting clays. Get a few friends to join you.

As most of you know, Island Lake is in a State Park. The DNR requires a parking permit. They patrol the parking lot with a passion (especially on weekends).
They also require us to sell them and they are available in the clubhouse. However (here is the POI) we DO NOT accept credit cards for the State Parking Permits. And we do not have an ATM on the premises.
The fee's are
$6.00 for a daily
$24.00 for an annual (good in all Michigan State Parks).

$6.00 for Annual Senior (must be 65 yrs. old).

Also I was going to volunteer my time that day to help any new shooter get started with things like proper gun mount, stance, and the basics on how to hit a moving target, but I have to actually work that day. I am going to try to work out a deal with one of our other instructors to be available for just a quick (maybe 10 shot get started mini-clinic).
Visit our website at http://www.islandlakeshootingrange.com
Also, remember our Side X Side fun shoot with a handicap system tomorrow.

I was listed as someone who could help out with trap and 5 stand, so unfortunately, there is going to be a need for Plan B.

Ok,
FYI;
Three weeks ago we upgraded our sporting clay counter system to a wireless remote system. When the new system arrived we had a buyer for our old claymate counter system.
What does that have to do with us you ask?
Well, the new system came in except the portion that operates the 5-stand and the old system was shipped to our buyer with the 5-stand controllers included.
Therefore at the present time we have no 5-stand to offer, unless it comes in within the next few days.
But we have a training field set up on the 5-stand field and one of our Level 1 instructors will make himself available for some (mini instruction) for about 1 hour for your new shot gunners. He will help new shooters with proper gun mount, stance and how to properly view a moving target. Each new shot gunner will get 8-10 shots if needed on the training field before going to trap, skeet or sporting clays.I am hopefull that we may get a rabbit machine in place for you to try.
I am also trying to get another instructor to be available on the trap or skeet field.
Hopefully you day at Island Lake will be an enjoyable one. Be safe and have fun

No need to borrow a shotgun. Someone picked up another Nova. :D

Well, I might not be able to make it afterall. I am trying to find a babysitter for my son. My wife forgot to take the day off work and now she can not get out of it. I am still hopeful though.

...Walmart in Taylor has plenty of 12 and 20ga target loads. Federal, Remington and Winchester all $23/100.

Postban, where will the MGO table be? I'm basically binging my entire aresnal with me, I'm hitting up the rifle ranges when we're done. I'd rather not leave all my guns in car...if the MGO table is inside then I can keep them back there.

Postban, where will the MGO table be? ...

We are just going to use one of the tables inside. DNR patrols that lot constantly to ticket for parking stickers, I would say your guns would be ok in the ride or inside, your choice. Never had a problem there.

NOTE TO EVERYONE: Parking is $6 per day, you must get a sticker from the desk inside or ride with someone with a yearly pass.

ALSO, remember to bring something to tote your ammo in. Range bag, pouch, backpack or something.

EYE PROTECTION, EAR PROTECTION

Comfortable shoes for walking one mile on a rocky path carrying gun and ammo.
Water to drink, snacks to nibble, SUNSCREEN!. It will be nice and warm, shorts OK.

NickS will be out to the event around noon.

He will be bringing some MGO merchandise and membership information.

My thanks go out to POSTBAN for organizing this event!

I've got my ammo and guns ready! I'll be bringing my AR, and all my surplus rifles for those that want to fondle them. I'm hitting up the rifle range once the shotgun shoot is over.

Today was great! Thanks Dave for letting my group use your 20ga. This was my first time since hunters saftey (0/5 clays then) and I got 6/25 skeet plus 2/2 during the practice.

It sure was a lot of fun, thanks again for organizing this!

Just a quick wrap on this outing. Nine people showed up for this event (and signed in). They were BURS, Shyster, wherei5mym1nd, Pyzik, Kimber45, Joeywhat, Shireman, customcreationz and Steve R (no screen name), not to mention me! We signed up one new member "Dhughes", sold 1 hat and 1 ceramic coffee mug. I guess that makes it a success. It was my pleasure to meet the members that showed up. I think it is safe to say a good time was had by all. Those that couldn't make it missed a great day for a great outing!
On behalf of MGO, thanks to all that showed up.

Thank you to all who put this together and thank you to Island Lake and the staff who made this fun and instructive. The skeet squad I shot with had a great time even if we did miss one or two birds. :-)

I had a great time as well, it was good seeing you all there. Perhaps we could have a couple more fun shoots there, or an MGO clay shoot or something. Maybe have a sporting clay tourny or some other fun-hearted competition.

I think we may have missed a few more than that but it was a great time!

Postban, thanks a ton for setting this up. My friend and I had a blast. It was nice meeting all of you and would love to do it again.

BTW Don, if you see my shoulder lying on the Sporting Clays circuit, please PM me. I think it fell off around Station #9.

I would like to second Nicks comments and thank all who came out. The weather was perfect, not one drop of rain hit the place from 930 to 1530 when I left. I know the radar showed a mess but at least it let us get a good day in.

Now, to Island Lake and the staff, simply above and beyond. They actually setup an intro to clays range, staffed it with an expert instructor and provided free targets to help out new shotgunners. All the staff was kind and helpful and extremely patient, giving advice and coaching. A business ethic and customer service like this are rare. I will be sending a personal thank you and note of appreciation on behalf of MGO to Pat Lieski for making this possible.

I heard many comments from my fellow MGO members about how much fun it was, especially Shyster, wherei5mym1nd mind and Shireman. Thanks for what you said guys, that is entirely the reason we did it, to show the fun of moving targets and shotguns.

special thanks to those that helped staff the table;

Joeywhat (bro, great shooting with ya!)
Pyzik ( it meant a lot man)
Burs (good to meet you and shoot with you)
NickS ( thanks for doing the majority of the time on the table, helped me to spend time coaching and shooting with my son)
and Todd from Customized. (Great shooting with your kids and wife, forgot to get you that ammo for Tyler, will bring it up when I pickup "uglystick")

Thank you to Postban, Mr. Hughes and the Island Lake Staff. I wish I could have been there but I wouldn't have missed the daughter's walk for her Bachelor's at EMU for anything. Maybe again sometime soon?
