Ive seen a lot of post on line about people painting their rifles and AR's using krylon paint from your local Walmart.

My question is has anyone done this here and how does it hold up? Im thinking about doing it on my SKS before I try it on my AR.

I've painted a few and it will wear from use.....but it's a simple matter just shoot it down again. On the other side of that coin, if you don't like it then it's fairly easy to just strip it back down, or re-do it. All of these are all just krylon'd. The only advice I would give you is to make sure you completely degrease the surfaces to be painted. You don't need to add a base of primer, just degrease and paint away. Post some pics if you decide to try it.

Lots of photos here, I do not have any of the ones my son did but it is no big deal to do one, heck he cannot even paint his PU with out messing it up but his guns look good.

Let me preface this by saying that I really don't mean to offend anyone. I have seen some krylon jobs that looked really good, but most of the time, I think the weapon ends up looking like a cheap dollar store plastic toy. Maybe it is the lack of a top clear coat or something. I dunno.

I know the point of it is not to be reflective for tactical reasons, but for me it just feels like a car that has primer all over it.

Maybe it's just not my cup of tea.

Consequently, most guys who krylon a multi thousand dollar gun actually use it rather than let it sit in a safe and take it out for posting pictures online.

I've got more respect for the beat up half krylon, half lube and carbon sludge guns than the works of art that go untouched for years.

There are exceptions to this rule, but it usually holds true.

Me too, thats usually how I find the good deals is when someone #@$%S one up like that.

please take no offense, but come on. krylon?? there are cheap enough coatings for the doit your selfers out there.

krylon is the defacto coating used in painting gun items these days. Simply because it's easily removable.

Guys in the sandbox use it for everything from guns to gear, it works.

they also use diet coke for a cleaning solvent but your not going to try it are you?
what i am saying is the krylon looks like crap. in the sand box I don't think they are trying to dress anything up.

One man's cheesy velvet painting is another man's work of art.

Please take no offense, as your point is valid....I'm set up to spray duracoat, and I do. But you dang sure aren't going to be removing duracoat like you can krylon if you don't like it, or mess it up. Short of bead blasting it off, or shooting over it you have few options. All cleaning solvents, and half the stuff under your kitchen sink will eat up krylon. If someone sells a rifle cheaply that's been hit with krylon thinking it's "messed up" it is because they have no clue what they even talking about.

The original poster was asking about something to try......I SURELY wouldn't recommend for him to go buy all the stuff needed to spray duracoat, or any of the other coatings, for what he was asking about.

Have a good day, Brad.

I painted this stock with Brownell's Alumahyde and Krylon webbing spray. You're right, the Alumahyde is a very tough product.

This is a before and after pic....

I painted my turkey gun with basic matte camo paint for boats, cleaned everything with strong degreaser alcohol, then used gray auto primer, cut wavy grass type stencils, in card stock and then overlayed dark over light colors.
Picture's are dark, but gun is more green then anything.

Has been holding up fine on all the metal, some flakeing on the plastic grip, which I wraped with camo grip tape anyways for the past five years.

primer then layered khaki, green brown then black, and then over and over again untill the tiger stripe pattern looked good.
took about three days, to finnish, dont paint over wet paint.

I painted the barrel, front sight/gas adjuster, and dust cover of my FAL with black grill paint. It came out fine.

All krylon and GTG..........

Your gonna get a few scratches here and there. Its not Alumihyde or Bake on by any means. But as far as I am concerned a rifle without some scratches is a sin and a sign of neglect.......

I did this one w/ the rustoleum camo paint, but I put plastic primer on it first and prepped the plastic properly. It held up VERY well. I ended up selling this gun on here to fund a Les Baer purchase, but I miss it very dearly:hydrogen:

"Painting my Weapon". I agree with a lot of people who replied. Remember "This is My weapon, not my gun, this one's for fighting this one's for fun" AS long as you use your weapon for it's intended used then life is good.
Don't worry about resale. Paint it with what ever you want.
If your happy with it who cares.....Shoot it and be happy.
Treat it with the respect it deservers. It's your weapon NOT you gun.

Anyone have any spare time on their hands and want to make a buck? I have a couple of rifles and a pistol that I would like to get painted. I am in the Detroit area. Is anyone game for this or know of anyone that is?

Aervoe paint is significantly better than Krylon and much easier to use than the Brownells stuff (which is very good). Aervoe paint is cheap and Karcent sells it at the gun shows or in his shop. Here is a good link for your information:

Best thing to do with a rattle-can paint job is to follow up with a coat or three of Matte clearcoat. The clearcoat provides additional protection from wear to the paint. The paint can still get dinged if it's smacked against something, but the clearcoat is key for a long-lasting (and good looking) result.

The trick is to prep the hell out of the surface, then the next trick is to give each coat (paint as well as clearcoat) enough time to cure before a re-coat. Multiple thin coats work better than fewer thick coats. Don't believe the instructions on the can, give it 24 hours to cure between coats.
