start with 400-600 grit sandpaper. then progress to 1000-1200 grit sandpaper. then progress to 1500-1800 or even 2000 grit sandpaper. its really quite smooth to the touch. follow up with Simichrome or a similar metal polish. or maybe some Flitz. ive never used Flitz but i hear its good...

ive got a smith M66 that had pretty deep scratches in it from a stupid mistake. i did that and had them gone in less than a couple of hours, done while i watched tv...

if you do the 'coarse' and then go to medium and fine, and you find that they are not coming out easily and quickly with the fine, start over with the coarse and take a little bit more with it. then use the medium a little be longer than the first time. you want the fine to leave a haze like finish before final polish. i will polish 2-3 times with the Simichrome...

the M66 looks like its chromed or nickeled on the sideplates and other polished surfaces...

Wenol Metal Polish works great. I noticed a mark on the cylinder of my GP100, it looked like a combination of a scratch and a scortch mark. A tiny dab of the polish, and a light buff removed it instantly.

Pep Boys used to carry it, but I'm not sure if they still do.
