Just wondering what you all do with pitting on a gun. Is it possible to fill the pits with something and then reblue or do you just blue over the pits. I don't have anything that has pits on it just wondering.

maybe some of the fancy gun paint would fill in the voids.

I am sure Todd has the real scoop, but I heard (years ago) that people would have a nickel or chrome finish put on a gun that was pitted. It is my understanding that it would fill the pitting.
With all the modern coatings and techniques, I bet there are a lot more options today.

Years ago I saw a Colt single-action that had been refinished by a top-shelf name gunsmith. The original gun had been horribly pitted. The 'smith tediously TIG welded the pits, turning them into bumps, the carefully filed/sanded/polished until the gun looked new.

The work was absolutely beautiful, but the cost ran into several thousand dollars.

My Dad worked in chrome plating for almost 20 years. He has chromed guns, bumpers, motorcycles, tools, etc., and said a good chrome job can hide a multitude of sins; the plating process will fill pits, etc., and leave a very smooth finish.

Here is an interesting link for fixing metal. They have some videos showing how to fix pitting in pot metal. It seems to run at a very low temp so it might be able to be used on gun parts without warping them.

Yes I can fix pitting several ways, and tig welding is one of them. It is alot of work to fix heavily pitted guns, but nothing is trash or unfix able till I deem it LOL ! Or your wife / pocket book deem it first !!!

But story short, plating will fill it. Your basically over plating and then buffing it down till its smooth again. May take several attempts to accomplish. But the finished product will look new again.

My brother used jewelers putty or paste to fill some pitting then blued over it.
