Survival/Orienteering Class
Class Dates:
Class at Gander Mountain, Novi
Wed June 24, 2009 6pm - 9pm
Fri June 26, 2009 6pm - 9pm
Field Days at Island Lake Recreation Area
Sat June 27, 2009 9am- about 4pm
Sun June 28, 2009 10am to Dusk
The classroom dates will include:
Basic Survival pack
Starting fires
Emergency Shelters
Basic First Aid
How to read a map
How to use a compass
How to use a Protractor
Learn grid coordinates, and how to use them
How to plot points on a map
Learn “field expedient” navigation techniques
Island Lake Recreation Area Field Days
Compass course
Learn Pace Count
Navigate from one point to another and over different terrain
Learn to use a compass individually and in a team
Basic shelter construction
Starting and cooking over a fire
Course requirements
Must be able to walk over rough terrain
Lensatic Compass with 360 degree markings required for class
Class Fees:
$50.00 per person cash or check
$55.00 per person for Visa, Mastercard or American Express
(Parking permit for Michigan State Parks is required. Parking Permits can be purchased at Island Lake Recreation the day of the field class. Parking permit costs are $6.00 for a one-day pass, $24.00 for an annual pass. The parking fee is NOT included in the $50.00 class fee)
